BKK flipping hook is the best flipping hook I've found. When rigging, put the hook next to the bait to visualize how you should thread it on the hook. I usually insert above center on the nose, that's probably where you're making a mistake. I use a palomar knot. Trokars are terrible hooks imo, they break and the cutting point cuts the bait so can't keep the hook weedless. Try using a 3/0 too.

I set the hook too hard for straight shanks. Have used snell, Palomar, and several other knots. Have rigged baits every way you possibly can on the straight shank and it just doesn’t work for me. EWG for me.

I agree!! I have tried straight shank hooks and have not like anything about them. Tying the snell knot is a pain and my hook never stays in the plastic. EWG for me and I use plastics most of the time!

This is an age old question, and it comes down to personal preference. I grew up using straight-shank hooks and they worked fine, but I found that the bait tends to slip down on the hook and requires constant fixing. I also prefer to "skin hook" my baits and that is easier with an EWG style. Others prefer the standard offset style with a round bend and claim that is the best all-around setup.

I've been going back and forth between straight shank and ewg for plastics. I think over time I'm finding the straight shank hooks them deeper and cleaner.

Maybe I’m the minority, but I don’t seem to ever miss or lose fish on an EWG.
