I actually got paid to watch trains go by from Penn Central, Conrail and CXS. They also paid me to re-rail them, repair them and inspect them.

Federal Law requires the Engineer to blow the horn 4 times as he approaches each crossing unless the town paid for a expensive warning system that blows off a sign at the crossing in question.

Usually the tracks where there first and then the housing followed with MANY bars also built close by. It's call a Railroad Town.

My grandparents lived one house away from the tracks. When I first got married, My wife and I lived in the house while our was under construction. The first night the train came through and blew the horn, i rolled out of bed. All other nights I never heard it again and slept right through it.

Where I live now, my nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away. The first night we stayed at our house, we were amazed at how quiet it was.

We have a set of tracks that go by our house to the Michelin Tire Plant (that is sadly closing ) Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the most part a engine will come by with tanker cars. I watch just about every time it goes by.
Just be kind to one another. It really is that simple.

I'd rather have a train next to me than a non-stop barking dog.

That was horrible news about the Michelin plant closing. Unfortunately, that will be devastating for the town and surrounding areas.
I feel for you and the whole area, so many quality lakes to fish along with tons of other outdoor activities.
    Best of luck to you.
