We are really considering purchasing a cabin by a lake and by cabin I mean an actual cabin not a "cabin" that is a size of a second home. Something that is just big enough to fit the family of four comfortable with room to squeeze a couple more in. Problem is most of what we have found is 5-6 hours away from home. Which for fishing wise that would be beneficial. However for those quick trips not ideal. For those in similar situations.....

1) Do you find the distance a deterrent to going? Does it ever prevent you from going? My concern is it almost seems to far for a quick weekend or longer Friday-Sunday weekend trip.
2) What do you do while not at the cabin? Let it sit empty? Rent it out via airbnb? Let friends/family utilize it, etc? Seems a shame to let something sit empty for upwards of 75% a month.
3) Security...How do you keep an eye on the place while not there for burglars, vandals, etc?

Any others pro/cons or input we should take into consideration?
