Lithium Batteries Observation and Review
I recently replaced 2 LA G31 batteries with 2 60AH Powerhouse lithium's, purchased from K&Kustomz, in my Phoenix 919 and Ultrex 80lb 24 volt. I also replaced my Dual Pro with a MK 330 PCL. My main reason for converting to lithium’s were warranty and longevity 1st, no maintenance, ability to monitor health and usage with APP, and Never needing to move a big HEAVY battery in a confined area, EVER AGAIN!
There is a learning curve in reference to how the batteries and app work, in reference to interpreting the data shown in the APP.
I received 2 batteries within a couple days of ordering. When they arrived neither were recognized by the Powerhouse app. I contacted Powerhouse after normal business hours, expecting a response the next day. I received one the same day. It was determined both batteries had a bad Bluetooth board, so they sent me 2 new ones with a return shipping label.
When the new batteries arrived, I was able to see both in the app. I charged them to 100%. After they sat for a week I checked the State Of Charge with the app, batt 1 was 100 and the other was 93. Both batteries showed the same voltage levels. I was concerned the lithium lost charge after 1 week of inactivity. I again contacted PH, and they explained the SOC in the app is mostly accurate, but the voltage level, cell health and deviation are the important numbers to keep an eye on in the app. He also stated the batteries will tend to level each other after use and self calibrate with the APP. The best time to use the app to monitor the condition of batteries is after they have been used.
I ran them hard a couple of times running at speeds between 5-10 and spotlocking in 20 mph winds for 5 hrs. When I got off the water and checked condition of battery on the APP, same thing. The SOC showed a 20+% difference between the batteries, but voltage was very close. After 2-3 uses the batteries are now showing the same SOC and voltage levels in the APP.
Time will tell if they perform as advertised, I have no reason to believe they won’t. I am really going to like not charging after every use, and Never needing to check/add fluid, or test with hydrometer. The weight saving is a definite plus. I am never going to miss picking up the old heavy LA batts. I will say after limited number of uses in varying conditions, the lithium’s seem to perform better, and do not drain down as fast as the LA.
As far as how boat performance is affected; its too early to tell. My hole shot was previously pretty good, but the conditions have not been the best for me to test handling and top end. I had room to grow with my previous setup, prop, P2P, weight distribution, I maxed out at 74 @ 5900. I am not trying to squeeze every ounce of performance available, Yet. I can normally run low 70’s but mostly cruise 40-50 with occasional 65-70 mph runs.
The customer service I have received from K@Kustomz and Powerhouse has been excellent.
