Is this still the current proper way for break in? I know sometimes issues come up, manufacturers adjust things.

Yes, it is. We put a lot of effort into making sure these FAQ topics are as up-to-date as possible.

I finished my 2 hour break as per the recommended instructions. The third time out, my cranking battery died and had to get a boost. I was about 3.5 hours on the engine. Since I was out in the lake, I let the engine idle to charge while fishing. Now to think of it i was still in the 8hr break in period. Was letting it idle for about 40mins acceptable during break in?

I also had maybe 10 fail attempts to start the engine while trying to get it out going with the booster pack. Does this do any damage?

    Thanks!

Not a good idea to idle for that length of time, ESPECIALLY during break-in.

Depending on which engine you have, some of your questions may result in different answers. Best to start a separate thread for YOUR particular engine, and provide the engine serial number (see Announcements at the top of the Forum for more information).

Maybe it can be better explained to everyone with this checklist. I am open for suggestions and would be happy if we could create a checklist together.

Of course, the rpm's do not have to be hit to the point, it only serves as a better illustration.

    Thank you!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Rirace. I would NOT, however, recommend this method. Please go back to Post #1 and re-read it. Your "charts" are not going to seat the rings and wear surfaces very well (simply too much "babying" of the engine).
