Yes it's true...you can see a picture of it on the Department of Wildlife page. Unfortunately, the fish died during the transition to Bass pro shops fish tank.
I believe it was actually 8lbs 3oz. Not that it matters.

Other thing I thought was interesting was that it wasn't big enough to win "big fish" in the tournament they were fishing, which I think was "The Fishers of Men". Someone else caught a larger largemouth to take "Big Fish".

It look like someone just caught another 8.3 smallie this week. The wildlife dept. has not verified the species. I guess there is a little debate to whether it's a hybrid. Still huge ether way
