Just a little more wine with my cheese

    Ladies and Gents,
New guy questions. As usual, I give folks a chance to be a fishing big brother or sister. LOL

How do I know which size rod to use?

What does Micro Guides do for you?

    What Makes a rod Fast?

Why must these dang bait casters be so tough to work?

Just started practicing with my new Abu 6'6'' (30lbs Power Pro Braid) I must have cut 50 yards off so far!

I am kind of thinking that I set out this season just to learn the casters and buy tackle but then I will be almost 40 before I learn what it takes to catch my second love!

I have an excellent starter boat and a serious desire to learn but I am so frustrated with all I dont know. I could kick my dad's butt for not teaching me!

Who wants to be my big brother?

Re: Just a little more wine with my cheese (bobbyscott21)

First off you can fish your whole life and not know everything. You should look for a club and join it as a non boater till you can "learn the ropes. Most if not all guys that I fish with at the club level are more than happy to answer questions and explain how or why the do something. Dont feel like you "have to" fish tournaments. There is nothing wrong with just going out on the water for the day to relax. If it ever gets to feel like its more of a job then a relaxing event, I will never pick up a rod again.

You can read all you want on the internet, google is your friend! Nothing will beat time on the water for a learning experience though. You dont have to use baitcasters exclusively. In fact I would venture to say that with the exception of flipping/pjtching you can use spinning outfits for every application out there. In fact some are better suited for spinning outfits. Get the best equipment you can afford. Fish cant tell the difference between a $60 combo and a $600 combo.

Above all have fun and welcome to a very addictting and frustrating sport!

Re: Just a little more wine with my cheese (bobbyscott21)

    IMHO...

    - The rod is based on technique.. check this link out... http://www.bbcboards.net/zeroforum?id=60

    - Micro guides... not my bag of tea..

    - Rod Fast... get a good motor.. check this site out... http://www.bassfishingandcatch....html

    - baitcasters are a pain, but, not to hard to tame.. am always available to show ya if you want some help, pointers..

Do not sit the season out.. get out with some BBC'ers and figure the chit out by chatting and meeting the team...

I will let you know if I have a backseat when I go out..

    tournaments aren't everythign!!!

Fo rme just getting out and enjoying a day is good enough.. Add a few BBC friends to the equation and it gets better.. our goal is to have one up on each other (bragging rites)..

If I had a backseat for this Sunday I'd offer it...

bobbyscot... Try using Mono on your baitcaster in the yard to practice with... it's about the easiest to throw, just get you a crankbait, take the hooks off and throw every evening you get home in the yard until you have it down.. thats how I learned. Like some of the post above said, try finding a local club and fishing as a non boater will be a big help in learning how to tournament fish, because it is different than just going fishing. Always remember to have FUN with it, if your not having fun its time to quit.. try not to get frustrated with it, we all have had to start some where and getting frustrated is something we all go through at some point in time. It will all come together just stick with it, time on the water is the best knowlege you can get. If you want someone to talk to about getting more in dept with poles and lures and line and seasons, I don't mine trying to help you out... it would take forever to type this stuff in up here
just let me know... Thank you for your service!

come on up here one day on Falls and I will show you how much I DO NOT know after 30 years of this hobby/quest/sickness/mental delusion...shall I go on? LOL

16 rods in the boat....400 lbs of tackle....gps with lake maps....HDS with side scan and down scan....and those lil bastages STILL outsmart me.

From one old NCO to a current NCO....I will help ya anyway I can bro.

WOW! Thanks guys! I will be at the BBC Piedmont on Harris this week! I will not sit out this season. Until this post I was a little embarrassed to tell ya'll that most of what I know has come from Wired to Fish and some really kind boaters! This group is awesome! I will keep trying with these new rods.

I get so many backlashes...it ain't funny. I cannot hit the broad side of a barn with a spinning rod. We all have strengths and weaknesses. C'mon and join the fun.

The "faster" they are the more the tip just flexes as opposed to the entire rod. I reserve fast tip stuff for mostly single hook style baits (t rig, c rig, jigs) so you can get a good hook set. On crank baits you want some give in the rod so you don't pull the hooks out of the fish. they basically set the hook them selves on cranks with all the trebles and you just tighten up on them... not a hard hook set.

Bobby... What are typically your free days? I may (75% probably) head to Harris Wed or Thursday if you want to hop in the boat.

Join a club. Even if you dont want to be a non boater. I join my club as non boater about 3 years ago and I know way more now than I did before. I know for a fact I am a better angler today because of the club. The rods and reels and what to use when will come in time but nothing will beat time on the water.

Re: Just a little more wine with my cheese (packfan)

THANK YOU!!!! You are really awesome. I am currently watching my wife balance on a ball (she is hoping that she goes into labor tonight). I have been trying to talk that baby out for the last week or so. Long story short, I cant take the beating if I miss this birth. Side note, she and I have made a deal about this weekend.

BUT CAN I HAVE A RAIN CHECK?? PLEASE
