    trouble starting/chocking my 2stroke johnson 200....HELP!!

ok guys, as most of you may know I just got my first bass boat and am learning allot every day. It is an 1988 Stratos 201 with a Jonhson 200 V6. It will not fire without starting fluid when you go to start it for the first time, but after you get it started and let it run for a few minutes it will fire right up the rest of the day.
I pump the ball in the back and also when you turn the key you can push it and it makes a clicking sound ( i assume that is the prime??) there is a lever on it by the throttle that appears to be the choke, but the guy at the marina said that it would not work because i had a hotfoot installed???????? if anybody has any ideas on how to start this thing cold i would greatly appreciate it. I dont want to be the guy that has to have starting fluid with him in order to go fishing LOL

    thanks so much guys

Keep using starting fluid and you will be fishing off the bank. the red lever on the solenoid should be pointing straigt down towards the bottom of the cylinder. When you turn the key to on you should hear a distinct click. If not put a multi-meter on the purple wire (red lead) and the black lead on a clean engine ground. Set the meter to VDC and have a bud turn the key to on and depress the key you should get a reading of +12+ VDC on those connections. You need to either remove one of the primer hoses and verify fuel being shot out of the solenoid or listen for the audible click.

ok there is no red level, and i dont even know where the sylinoid is there is a lever by the throttle that i was told was the choke. When i push the key in i do hear the distinct click i do that a bunch of times as well as squeeze the ball is that click when i push the key the choke? and all the testing your talking about is way over my head

on mine, when you push the key in that is the choke. when its cold I have to push it in and hold it there for a few seconds when I'm starting it. once it fires I let it run for a minute. I think the other lever you are talking about is a second throtle. I had an old boat that was like that. it allowed you to rev the motor while it was in neutral. if you have a hot foot it will be disconnected. don't forget to pump the bulb up till it feels kinda tight. if it doesn't get tight you might need a new bulb. hope it helps. if I'm wrong hopefully somebody chimes in and lets me know.

I have one of these cold blooded beasts also and this is the way to start it right off in the morning!

First, do not worry about flooding it as I do not think it is possible if the engine is running correctly!

    1. Pump bulb until your hand hurts from squeezing so hard!
    2. Push key in for the count of ten!
    3. Pump bulb again until your hand hurts some more!
    4. Hold the throttle down ever so slightly and hold the key in while cranking!
    5. When it fires let up on the key and if it tries to die push the key back in breifly!

    That should do it!!

Sorry you do have a red Lever it is on your primer solenoid and that is under your motor cover/cowl. Once you squeeze your fuel prime bulb that will fill your fuel system. Tuck your motor to negative trim, turn the key to on depress your ignition key for 5 seconds and try to start. Repeat the procedure. If you have a warm up lever on your throttle raise that to advance your timing and slightly open the throttle plates. Press the key again. Once lit then feather the key to keep the motor from stalling.

What Fred said is exactly how I start mine when it is cold. Make sure you tuck the motor that is important. Don't try to start it with it partially trimmed up. What I do is pump the bulb till it is hard, then i turn the key till the system tach lights come on and it beeps at me, then I press in the key to choke it 2-3 times, then turn it over holding the key pressed in. Sometimes it will fire right up sometime I have to start over by pressing in the key again 2-3 times. Once it fires I press the key in to keep it running till it warms up.

I usually sit at the landing with the motor running, killing all the bugs in the county for 2-3 minutes before I try to back it off the trailer.

If you have never had a good tune up at a dealer that knows what he is doing, it would benefit you to have a link and sync done! The sets your timing with your throttle so everything is synced like it should be!

Fred, is that lever supposed to be up or down? ours is up and it runs fine... there is a little sticker on the airbox that shows it swinging down.. ?????

It allows you to bypass the choke portion and the new and improved valve lets you shoot either BRP engine tuner or BRP fogging oil into the motor for maintenance. It is called a maintenance port (go figure) . If you turn it 90* you will disable the choke.
