Not good at all! Someone should be hung!![]()
guys,i was down there yesterday.i did'nt see any dead fish anywhere and the fishing was outstanding and has been for several weeks.not sure where that was video was shot at.i could'nt tell by looking at the picture.alcoa has pulled so much water thru the lake since early august i have a hard time believing that any of that bad water is left in the lake.i hope this isolated to the bottom part of the lake.those are some scary pictures.
I was there Monday Mid Morning and could smell dead fish in places back in Abbots but I did not see anything. Oh the fishing sucked nothing was feeding when I was there.
We were in second creek sat. and sunday, never seen any dead fish.
Second Creek is upstream from Abbotts how did the sewage get there?
Good point, MG.
Isn't "Fisherman's Cove" down close to One Bush?
How can Second be up stream with Abbots is do north straight across the main channel. If anyhting Second is down stream
I think if you put an orange beachball in the river at the I-85 bridge, then opened all of the flood gates, that beachball would go across the mouth of Dutch Second Creek before it went across the mouth of Abbots Creek. I could be wrong, but that's how it looks on my map.
Exactly poop rolls down hill so Second would be south so if it was in Abbots it rolle dinto Second correct
Yea second is upstream, but if the gates were closed and the wind blows right it could affect Second. Keep in mind the big mercury spill from Duracell came in through Abbots back in the early 80's affected the whole lake from what I understand.
that part of the lake where the fish kill happened is actually cut off from the main part of the lake.if you go under the bridge at tamarac and bear to the left there is a riprap wall where st. matthews church rd crosses the lake.there is a fairly large lake on the backside of that riprap wall that is connected by a small culvert that passes under the wall.that is where the fish kill occurred.the public is very misinformed about where this actually took place.don't get me wrong it's bad,but not as bad as if it was in the mouth of second creek or in crane.apparently the oxygen got dissolved in that little lake.i have a hard time believing that water from the back of abbotts creek can find it's way all the way to the back of second creek.by the way, second creek is upstream from abbotts.you have to bear to the right to get to second.that's upstream.i'm sure i'm gonna get lit up for saying this but i am sick and tired of seeing the yadkin river keeper bad mouth high rock.my opinion,it's one of the best lakes in the state.the weights it keeps kicking out is amazing.i was practicing for the bass weekend series when the sewage spill was taking place and i never saw any dead fish or any "bad" water and 90% of my practice time was spent in the back of abbotts creek.just my 2 cents.
Well put-together, thanks.
The riverkeeper is just doing his job. Unfortunately, good news doesn't get published as quickly and as often as the bad news. I saw the same things down on the Neuse River when I lived down east. The river keeper down there only got published when there was something wrong.
Thanks that clears up a lot for me. I agree anything on the other side of the Tamrac bridge would be unlikely from the sewage spill. I think for it to get to even get to Second it would have to be the right conditions just going by the current flow.
most fishermen know or at less heard of fall turnover. Well during this time of the year this natural action happens and when it does sometime acids and gases are released from the bottom of the lake if theres too much is will lower the o2 and fish that cannt travel away from those areas will pearish. that small lake only has flow throw that pipe under the hwy I can see it happening with the cold sap we just went thru. But no way can I see sewage coming in from abbots in high enough levels to effect Second Creek in the Tamarac area....jmo

With the lake flowing over 3000 Cubic feet/Second, little flow from Abbotts would be able to get upstream to Dutch Second, as stated before.
It's a good thing to have the river keeper, but a bad thing to have him making statements before he gathers facts. It give him a bad name, and that's sad because we need some oversight on the Yadkin Chain that's not a puppet of Alcoa.
Also, the media needs to check their facts before they publish things, and that particular news story takes the events from two completely different occurrences and melds them together for a news story. It seems to be all about the $$ in circulation sometimes.
Frank A hit it right on the head. Fall turnover kills fish sometimes. Happened all the time on my childhood lake ( Boone Lake, NE Tennessee ).
I was up in Abbotts for the first time in over a year last week. I can say that the effects of the Thomasville spill are evident to me, as the quality of the water appears to be down, and the grunge that is growing where I remember clear water is a shame.
