    '95 Johnson 150 Fast Strike

I have the following on my 95' Ranger 354v that I'm restoring

    J150GLBOM
    S# G03834413

    Heads of #338311 on them

So far, I don't have too much to complain about the engine. I put some money in it last season. New starter, thermostats, plugs, wires, fuel sensor, and decarbed the engine.

Is this what you guys are referring to as a de-tuned? What does that mean. Still reading through ALL the posts!!

With all the work i had done, the engine is still giving me a few fits at idle. I had it to my local shop and they did a bunch of tune-up, etc but still wants to stall out. It is worse in the heat of summer. Runs great at speed! Have to prime it for every start.

I do want to move the prime bulb out of the back compartment and outside. Is this a good idea? As of now, it sits on the starter battery and I do not like that. Would be better over the spash well and easier to get to.

Thanks for all the valuable info!!

    Dave

I should add. Had compression check done last year. One cylinder at 105, the rest 110-120

    Fastman,

Yes, I did see that last night. I'm new to the forum and it took me a couple hours to go through all the topics i have questions on. I'm gonna pull the cowling and check that out today.

I think I'm also gonna move the prime bulb and replace it.

Can anyone answer which engine i have?

I think the de-tuned is all built after the 1st few built in 91 that was over the 10% hp level. At least thats what I was told about my 93 I had which was an excellent motor as far as lasting only complaint I had was it was hard on gas an oil as compared to my 225 ho ficht.

I think your GLBOM is really a GLEOM which is a 1995 Fast Strike nothing super double secret about it. Nothing super duper your standard run of the mill Fast Strike.

yes the 1995's were the de-tuned engines. the 1991's that were "hot" said 150 and were closer to 175ish and the 175's were closer to 190ish. all engines after 1992 were detuned to within 10% of actual hp. they are great engines i have a 93 faststrike also and love it.

i would put the primer bulb back outside too. makes it eaiser to get to. your idle may be set to low, and may need to be increased. also make sure the timing roller is touching the timing advance ramp.

as posted earlier look here: http://www.bbcboards.net...otors

I think your right. A bit dark in the garage behind the motor. That and I probably need glasses...

Should i be concerned about the lone 105 piston? Is there any precaution I can take to ensure this cylinder lasts???

I'm just guessing its a bottom one? most seem to find the lower cylinders have lower compression

Yeah, it is the bottom right if looking from the prop end...

Is that alot of difference between 105 and a 120? Enough to worry??

    Re: '95 Johnson 150 Fast Strike (anderdw2)

I wouldnt worry about it. Your average is around 110-115 that high one could be a reading fluke and the lower ones like I said are always lower.

De-carbon then run a a few cans of Seafoam threw it and try again.

You are opening the throttle 100%, checking it warm, with all plugs out right?

Compression check was done at my dealer last summer. I did decarb the engine. I guess maybe a few doses of sea foam might ease my mind a bit. Just want keep this motor lasting.. It already has 15yrs on it and wouldn't mind another 5-10...
