Mine seems to be good and strong, I think if its a rude ram its a ho with about 246 hp,the original lower units are weak and was out of mine when I bought it but got one from sei for $800 with a 3 year warranty.I have read where some have trouble out of the power dist. box but most can be fixed with a little cleaning or a soldering iron. They ain't the ficht motors that gave a lot of trouble ,those were the small ones 150s an 175s

They are DFI not EFI in as they don't mix fuel and oil. Strong engines with a lot of torque. If a dealer is selling get a computer printout of codes, and engine parameter profiles. As with any used engine do the homework and get it checked thoroughly.
I have the exact one you are talking about on a Ranger 520 vx with duel console and has been great.I have a small oil leak im trying to find. The ONLY thing i have a problem with is on a cold morning it takes a little bit to keep it running, but once she gets warm its good all day long.![]()
yea my 2003 is alittle cold natured for about the first 5 min. then loves to purr and eat
OMC had a great motor when they developed it...too bad they never got to see the fruits of its Labor.
When BRP go their hands on it they changed it from "Rude Ram" to 225HO![]()
I always liked the colors and graphics of the 2001 225 'Rude Ram![]()

I've found when my 03 wants to run a little rough, or even die going to reverse, I can check the plugs and they will be a little wide on the gap. Unless I'm due for some new ones I can pull them, clean 'em and regap to .028 tight and she runs like new. I personally do advise, bite the bullet and run the XD-100 in it.....that's some gooooood oil!!
I was always scared to run anything but ficht oil,i have had people tell my engine choice was no good and i would be sorry, and it could go out on me any time.I try to run mine pretty between 3500 and 4000 rpm.a frien of mine tells me run it hard thats what it liks. Any sugestions??
I run mine to the max at least one time every-time I go out, and till I got another prop it was a little past 6000 rpms, now its 5900. I do a lot of preventive maintenance thoe.Which I learned on here![]()

what exactly do you do, i do run mine a couple of times wide open to let it really fly at 6100 rpms, thanks
to be honest i keep mine below 6k.... im a believer that the harder you push them past 6 all you get is a bag of bolts in the end. between 5650 and 5950 seems to be ideal for mine. my fastes speed is still at 5850 with a high pitch prop on my 225 HO. I love the low end torque just seems to push and push
Nothing big just de-carb twice a season at least ,change plugs or check an re-gap every 15 to 20 hours and change the lower unit oil way more than I need to but its cheap and I can check for water.Oh and run 100% synthetic oil 90% of the time and a synthetic blend when I cant, keep a hot battery with as close to 1000 cranking amps. ...and read here and follow tips from people like champion man,bassenister,...![]()

I actually just put the iridium champion plugs in mine... see if they last longer. I changed the thermostats to the etech ones as directed by seahorse. Seems to run evern better. hopefully no regapping neccessary. As he said when i was running the double platinum plugs i had to regap every 20 40 hrs. I purchased the iridium plugs through oreillys. 6.90 apieve cant beat that sh@T!
Thanks guys,i learn something new everyday.![]()
Head temps is important to plug life on the DI's. It never hurts to hook her up to the muffs with the laptop and monitor the head temps with an infared thermometer to verify that BOTH heads are coming up to temp after the stats open. Sometimes you need to go into the blowoff valve and glue the outside edges of the rubber grommet, to keep water from blowing by causing lower temps when idling.
Nice.. il check that also..... i hope the irdiums will show me alot longer life than tdouble platinums...
bassmister , ...would the blow by valves when not working right cause low water pressure on the gauge but still a nice strong pee stream

I'll defer that one to SeaHorse, or one of the other gurus. Fortunately for me, I've not had problems with my head temps, so I've not had to go in to mine. But I was told by a master tech, that if the temps aren't where they should be to look into the blow off valve.

Thanks seahorse, I"ve switched impeller kits twice in less than a year trying to get my water pressure up, and can only get it to 12psi at max but it never heats or throws a light or buzzer, but has a pee stream of 5 ft straight out the size of a pencil when idling, I"ll have to get the manual out and find it.
