    Misconception Abounds

So, I've put my rig on the market and get a response from what appeared to be a prospective buyer. It amazes me how much credence one puts in 1 individual. I've been around the block here in the metro Phoenix area and have found MANY people in the marine business that are completely clueless. It never siezes to amaze me. Here's an example of it:

"Hey, I wanted to let you know that my mechanic has talked me out of looking at or buying your boat. I trust him 100% and so I am going to listen to his advice. I was really excited to see the boat to!! He just explained to me how the viper cobra has problems but more importantly how crapy the Evinrude are. He is anit Evinrude. I know first hand of 3 people who have "burned up" their Evinrudes and he even knows a guy that burnt up 3 in one month. Based on his advice I have to get a Mercury or Yamaha. I cant believe Evinrude is even in business still. They have filed for bankrupcy twice. Anyway, I am bummed because I thought your boat was the one but I am going to pass. If you have any questions, feel free to call me.

Yes, it's a sad thing for me, Mike. I recently went through a divorce and the Cobra has to go. I always said it was going to turn to dust while I had it, but shift happens.

Trust me, it isn't just in Arizona. Ignorance and Cluelessness ABOUNDS in the Marine business. There is a LOT of anti-Evinrude around here too

    Re: Misconception Abounds (Darth VMAX)

I would tell him he needs to find a new mechanic and become a BBC member! This will not only educate him but same him some $$$$ down the road!!

Then again maybe his mechanic doesn't want to lose this guys business so he's telling him to go buy a Merc!!!!

    Re: Misconception Abounds (JoePA)

I replied in a civil way. I suggested he seek out a variety of feedback from more than 1 individual that displays a loyalty to one brand. I mentioned to him that ALL 3 can blow and have arguably the same level of reliability now. Anyhow, the part about the hull got my goat, too. I have a Champ and Cobra of the same year, give or take months, and the Cobra still shines like new. Then, I challenged him to seek out candidate boats, then come see mine for grins. That should dispel misinformation about that, too. He wrote back and said he needed more info about Evinrude. I directed him to BBC and to ride and decide.

Sorry guys, I had to vent a bit. Crazy...

I just want them to do some research. Granted, if I was trying to unload my Ficht w/ a sign of welded block, then I can understand. But, given the history of THIS motor/rig, it's been flawless.

Not yet, Joe. I'll post it this weekend. I started listing it on Craigslist in Phoenix, but I'll ratchet up the exposure on BBC for sure!

Miguel, Al charges $35 to list a boat here. I can't believe the mechanic told the tire kicker that must have been a Merc wrench. . It constantly amazes me how misinformed people are. It will go once someone comes and goes for a test ride. I like the Viper reminds me of a Champ.

I have a 2003 Ranger 520vx w/2003 Evinrude 225 DI like bassmeister has and the motor has 136 hrs.The motor has never had any issues and i am the 2nd owner. Both of us have serviced the motor annually with no problems. The boat is for sale and I get bashed because it has an Evinrude on it.I don't understand because the boat is very nice and never a problem. Why do people think this way?

It is because of the OMC fichts that caused OMC to file bankruptcy.

    Re: Misconception Abounds (ChampioNman)

I was at a Ranger dealer last weekend. Ask the owner for a ballpark trade in price for my 1998 518 dvs on a Z520. Gave him a honest description of my boat. I told him it had a 2002 Evinrude 200hp DFI on it. 147 hrs on the motor. Bought it new in 2004. He said that's a Ficht right. I said yes. The look I got next made me feel like I had a big toe coming straight out my forehead. He told me he would have a hard tome getting rid of the boat. Was not even interested. Never did get any numbers. Maybe if I take the Ficht decal of the cowl. Never had any real issues with the motor, guess I will keep this unit for awhile longer.

    Re: Misconception Abounds (fordman)

In 03 BRP changed from Ficht to DI, and imho there is a world of difference. BUT, some people just can't let go. Even with the Ficht injectors I think they still get a bad name, altho BRP improved on them. I STILL believe the Ficht technology got it's bad name from cheaper electronics, mainly the ECU of that day, the EMM of BRP is a much better complement to the injectors of today.............just the old folks won't let it go. Other than the quietness of the ETEC, I prefer my DI, I like the throaty growl she has.
