Tach Bouncing ?????

I have a 2002 Ranger 518 DVX with a 2002 Evinrude 200hp motor.
When I run the motor with the Rabbit ears on in my driveway the tach is bouncing all over the place but the motor isn't surging !!!! What could be the problem, any idea?

Does it do the same in the water? What about when the laptop is hooked up?

Check all the connections on the back of the Tach too. Loose or corroded ground or ignition wire will cause it to jump around.

Just bought the boat so won't be putting the boat into the water until spring time... I haven't had a laptop hook up to it yet... Maybe I will take it to a Evinrude dealer.

The 02 DI's were pretty solid motors. May just be a bad ground on the block.

Thanks for the info..... I will check the grounds and the connection on the back of the Tach...
