sorry guys i got sent to chicago got back tonight after further inspection and seeing the post aboveand thinking "boy your going to look like a dumba$$ on this one" I rechecked every thing and the shift rod spins(jumps) about 1/8th of a turn when you turn the prop while it is in reverse I dont know if the bent shift rod turned it more when I tried to install it or the frustration of trying for 3 hour to install the lower unit or maybe the crack i was smoking earlier in the day
that made me think it was spinning with the prop. but I still need to get a new shift rod.

On installation of the case, just have someone wiggle the flywheel to align the splines, don't hassle with the propshaft. You can just straighten the shift rod as best you can as this is not that critical. Just make sure you have 21 15/16 from the mounting surface of the case to the center of the hole while in neutral. As far as the rod movement in relation to propshaft movement goes, this is strange. There is no reason that I can think of for this to occur. The 1 piece versus the 2 piece driveshaft is irrevelant. Eddie, my point was that a longer drive shaft LU by a 1/4" may or may not work.![]()
Both cases were pre '92, therefore the driveshaft lengths would be the same, looper or crossflow. That's what I meant when I stated irrelavant, even if I did misspell it. It had been a long day, sorry about that!Anyway, you are correct. If the shafts have been changed at some point in time, this is something to look at carefully!!

this is all on the 225 not on the 2.6 (it is just laying on it side in my shed right now with a broken ring) I can get the 21 15/16th on the shift shaft(it was out of ajustment when I pulled it apart)

O.K. The 225 is an '86, correct? Either case should work on this engine. The shift rods will be different
