yes it should be straight except for the crook at the top.
is this a new lu?
do you still have your old one?
did you turn the shaft any at all?
i used to have a link to a site with the shift rod measurements and cant find it and i do not have access to my books right now, but if you still have your old lu all you have to do is measure it and make the new one the same......... the length is critical for proper shifting. i will see if can find it again.
i have done a 225 and i can tell you they are pretty heavy....... its best to have a friend help you so you can get the water pick-up tube lined up (i use a long skinny flat tip screw driver and a flashlight to help out).... also putn some grease on the driveshaft so you dont have to worry about it seizing up next time.
other than that its just manual labor.
i will look and see if

The shift rod is 21 15/16 from top of the lowers housings flat area to the center of the hole, when its in neutral, helps to put a little grease on the top of drive shaft and a little arond the rubber exhaust seal, put it in a gear right before you put it up in the housing and you can turn the prop shaft to get the splines lined up on the drive shaft, this is just from my experince on mine I have had mine out a few times lately but thanks to the gearcase man eddie pope i finally got working right.

You fella's sure if he is installing a one piece or a two piece driveshaft and the measurement it correct? If your are off on LU's you have a possible bad juju condition and then you give our buddy Gearcaseman, Eddie Pope in the $$.![]()
Your right he doesnt mention what year,0r if its a two piece, well if its a 1 piece drive shaft that may help if its a two piece those measurments wont work.Good catch ChampioNman

no year??
i was under the assumption it was a 1986 evinrude with tilt and power steering..........
http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/...6ec1c is not listing a 2 piece driveshaft for a 1986 or could it be he may have an extension?.... of course i didnt even see an extension kit either.

sorry took so long to get back to ya, yes it is a one piece drive shaft the reason I pulled it apart is to check the shift arm length. i just bought this motor and it was supposed to have a 0 hour lower unit but it wouldnt shift into reverse. the shift arm is croooked so i think I will buy a new one for it. i tried to install it and I get the water pump over the water passage and the drive shaft into the engine but that is as far as it will go. i quit for the night work on it later in the week.

There was no 2 piece drive shaft in that year they were only 1 piece.Shift rod was also a different numvber.

follow this advise closely, about 5 years ago i took mine to a local mechanic advised by a club memeber,he could get me going in 2 days for $750 with a used l.u..well a week later 5 miles after take off i basically blew off the whole lower unit,he put a old model unit on my 96 motor because they looked the same, his words,it ran great til it blew everything loose.i then had to buy another unit and have it put on..still havn't got my 750 back either..
only grease the splines on the side of the driveshaft,if you put it on top it can cause too much pressure on the pinion gear when you pack it in there and tighten up the lower unit bolts and cause premature failure.that i don't know for sure.
one other question. should the shift rod move when the prop is rotated?

You should be able to move the shift rod vertically to engage forward and reverse gear. Are you saying that your rod moves vertically while in gear, and you're rotating the propshaft?
no but it spins when you rotate the prop. also do you sell shift rods?

Just give Eddie a call he'll get you fixed up.
Yes, I can help you with a rod, but I don't understand what you're experiencing here. Your shift rod is actually spinning when you rotate the propshaft?![]()
yes it is actually spinning, by you reply that doesnt sound good
