i dont know exactly for sure what years you are trying to exchange but i can personally tell you a 1979 johnson will use the same steering cable as a 1986 mercury..... the boat in my pic came originally wiht a merc 150.

unless one is really really old, or they changed very recently, they are almost all the same fittings, you may require a bit of adapting, (maybe) but the basics are the same.
