Bad news about my 1988 Evinrude 150hp

    The serial # is R1818087
    Model # E150STLCCA
    Thanks

Looks like # 3 and # 5 cylinders are leaking 50% to 60 %, and #5 is scored up pretty bad (you can feel it).

Well, for years I've "threatened" to rebuild an engine. I guess the first might as well be my boat motor.

I'm sure it will take me forever to do it!!! I hope I can! Of course, I'll have to have a machine shop do the bore out...but still....lots of work in my near future.

Let's just hope I can do this!

I guess while I'm at it, I'll rebuild the wiring harness! it is fornicated.

the estimated hours is 17, I'm sure it will take me 5 X that!

You can do it. Get a factory service manual and go from there. A 12 point 5/16" socket and a good flywheel puller will get you in the ballgame. Bore the bad holes as small as possible, you may have to do this again someday! Piston kits are @ 50-60 dollars. Good Luck

Thanks for the info. I have the factory manual....and I have a "chicken foot" puller, but I'll buy a better one if necessary.

That would be good information to have...what specialized tools I'm going to need. Especially if it is something expensive or will take me a while to get delivered.

I do have access to an engine puller and an engine stand. So I'm cool there.

What's this about a smoker? LOL?

ChampioNman, we need to square away $$$$. I know I need to ship you my carbs and pay the $15.00 shipping, but I don't know what I need to send you money-wise to not insult you. E-mail me...I guess I should've e-mailed you by now.

Finished rebuilding my 04 225 HO on Saturday, enjoyed it (other than the cost of parts, ouch). I don't think your motor will have the large number of hoses etc that my DI motor has so this may not be as important for you but I found that a) taking copious notes and b) digital photographs during disassembly really helped with assembly. You'll need torque wrenches, piston ring expander/compressor, taps to clean bolt holes in the block and heads and (very important IMO) somewhere clean to work. I came very close to destroying my puller getting the flywheel off - please make sure the loosened flywheel nut is still on the crank when that things lets loose or you could get hurt.

In my limited experience the biggest/worst/most difficult part of the whole deal was cleaning everything - Engine Tuner really helps with the carbon in the piston rings, heads etc - took me days. Reassembly was realtively easy and fun. Good luck with it.
