    lost a cylinder(poop!!) 2.6xp

well had a rough t sunday no fish and lost a cylinder. on the way back it was running good then it dropped rpm came back then dropped again by that time I was at the ramp(less thean a mile run). thinking I had fouled a plug, I pulled them all. as I when I pulled the bottom drivers side it was a little harder to unscrew when I got it out the electrode was bent touching the center(crap). so I went by autozone and rented a compression gauge. I had 105# on all but that one it had 80# go figure.
going to pull the Head tonight what should I be looking for. any tell tale signs of?

    looks like rebuild time.
    thanks

well took of the heads looks like i ate a piston ring
piston is toast so is the head and a couple grooves in the cylinder wall
How hard is it to find piston/head
also I heard all omc pistons weight the same even if they are bored?

is this worth the effort for this motor really thinking hard about a looper

parts should not be a problem, but unless you do it yourself a good rebuild will cost a bit of cash, you may find someone who will only do a part job and replace 1 piston and so on, but if it were mine, it is all or nothing. also you need to find out why one cyclinder crapped out, other wise you will have 2 rebuilds to pay for.

Do yourself a favor and cut the bolts and let that old xp fall on the floor and go get something new/newer. The savings in fuel will make it worth the trouble.IMHO

Just had the same thing happen to my '92 200XP looper (same cylinder too!). Mechanic said my VRO was the problem and told me to premix the gas after the overhaul. Got a rebuild kit for $900 and the machinework was $50. Less than a thousand to do it myself. I have quite a bit of mechanical experience though. It's not that hard. Just get a good manual and follow it step by step.

You need another mechanic. If the VRO went then you would be looking at 6 trashed holes, not just one........

I am still amazed at the amount of "mechanics" that blame the VRO for a single cylinder failure, (or a dozen other problems as well) it just goes to show that either a lot of marine techs are crooks, or should not even be in the game at all becuase they are inept and do not understand the item that people are paying them to repair!

U need to look at ur carbs. Thats the issue. I was told the same about my oil pump and guess what. All the cylinders had oil cept the top left. It went lean due to a carb issue. Not the oil pump.

What could be wrong with the carb? Is it a jet problem, or a need to be rebuilt problem? Just wondering, would be nice to not have the same problem all over again.

More than likely it leaned out due to a orifice backing out or a stuck float, could have even been a bad reed.

A carquest or Napa should be all you need for cylinder work. Look at pro-marine usa for your sleeves, pistons and gasket set should you go that route. If your going to do just the one cylinder stick with BRP parts.

ChampioNman do you think it is worth saving this old motor or should i look into a 200/225 looper I have no doubts about fixing it but putting it on the same boat you have. it is a little anemic in the torque dept.
