Looking at the possibility of fishing a couple of winter tournaments - what can I expect on this lake during Jan and Feb?
The earliest I have fished Lake of Egypt is March. The weather is moderating by then and there are often some good fish being taken. We have had tournaments where there are numerous fish in the 6-7lb.
The lake has been developed and is continuing to grow although there are some areas where there are no houses as yet. If you fish around private docks, some the locals are very protective and I think there is a fishing restricion of 10 yards from a dock but there are plenty of good areas to fish on the lake where that is not a problem.
Have a good trip, I will be there for a couple of weeks in April....

I need to get down there some day. I hear the fishing can be great.

Some of the heaviest weights can be in February tourneys.
I have had more fun on Lake of Egypt than any other lake in Illinois. In fact..years ago a group of us went to Toledo Bend and had a good trip. On the way back we stopped at Lake of Egypt for the day caught bigger fish....it was great. I usually go down 3-4 times a year......you are welcome to make the trip with us if you like.

Lots of lake restrictions
speed limit
Can't fish with in 10 yrds of docks
These are enforced by lake patrol.
You must pay to launch your boat and, if it is a big tournament get there early.
Lake has alot of grass, usually a reaction bite. Cold and hot water areas of the lake. The main marina is a huge release area and usually off limits. There are shallow areas, so be careful when running. Locals usually dominate the tournament standings.
Enjoying life in Southern Illinois

Try to go with someone local. Some of the complaints mentioned above are not that bad and in the winter no one really cares what happens out there. The local guy will know how far to push the rules. The tournaments kinda get a free pass on some of the rules too so its not as bad as some make it out to be.
Is the Alabama rig legal there because its a private lake?
I heard its a private lake so the DNR doesn't have a say in it... I can't it on the DNR website.
The state has an agreement with the lake owner to manage the fishery. Lake Springfield is owned by the city but the state manages it. Lake of Egypt is the same way. The letter I just read said that you could use the A rig on egypt but calling someone in charge down there to be sure would be a good idea.
The Heartland Bass Club will be holding it's 9th Annual Shorty Switzer Memorial tournament on Lake of Egypt on May 5th. Last year, we had 56 boats. We are estimating between 65-75 for this year. Cost is $110 per team w/$10 going to Big Bass Honors. Payout at 70%. Club made a contribution to the Shorty Switzer Memorial Scholarship at John A. Logan College in the amount of $1,000 last year.
If you're interested, I can email you an application. Applications will start showing up in the local area stores within the next week or two.
