Hey does any one know the IL DNR rules on umbrella / alabama rigs?
Hey does any one know the IL DNR rules on umbrella / alabama rigs?
I'd like to know also. Have a couple of lakes in mind for that rig.
I just read the dnr rules and it states that you can have 2 hooks or lures on one line. Second part I'm a little confused, states you may have more than that on lakes that don't have that rule. I think I will just call one of the officers I work with.
It would be greatly appreciated if you do so! thanks mike!
Waiting for a call back, I've read on other sites they were not legal, but I'll wait until I here from DNR personally.
It should be legal. How many trot lines have we pulled up with a ton of hooks on a cord? And those go unattended.

It sounds like some IL lake are 2 pole and 2 line lakes. Some don't have this law. These are the lakes that permit trot lines. So I guess Alabama rigs maybe be legal depending on what lake you are fishing. Springfield is a 2 line/pole lake as was Shelbyville and Clinton when I just looked them up. Each lake has a little bit different rules. Lake Taylorville was not 2 line/pole lake. Feel free to read and figure this stuff out.![]()
any thoughts on lake of egypt? I read the laws on it and its all in the person's interpretation of what it really says.
I fished a tournament on Coffeen Sunday and saw 2 guys throwing an alabama rig

Alright, Sgt. Lewis got back to me today. He said they have been getting calls on the A-rig since the day it got out. The legal dept told him they are Illegal on all IL lakes and they are going to put something out to notify fisherman. I asked him how trot lines are legal on some lakes and they have multiple hooks/lines. His response was those are site specific rules for each lake made by the state biologist and they have nothing to do with that rule.
Also, I asked if you could use it with only 2 hooks on 2 baits and just use the weighted heads no hooks on the other 3. He said that was fine for now, but that may change at a later date.
Another website stated that FLW was going to ban them from all tourneys next year anyway because of all the confusion and different laws in each state.
Mike I appreciate your hard work and clarification on the matter. Thanks thats what makes BBC so great![]()
copy from Illinois registration book
A 2 pole and line fisHing onlY regulation permits the angler to
take fish with no more than 2 poles with no more than 2 hooks or
lures per line. Also permitted (unless otherwise noted) are legal-sized
cast nets, shad scoops and minnow seines for bait fishing. Bullfrogs
may be taken by hand, gig, pitchfork, spear, landing net, and hook
and line during bullfrog season.
on WateRs WitHout tHe 2 poles anD lines fisHing onlY
restriction, up to 50 hooks in total may be used legally on devices permitted
under a sport fishing license. Legal devices include: bank
poles and lines, dip nets, throw lines, trot lines, buoyed devices (jug
fishing), gigs, spears, bow and arrow, and bow and arrow devices.
No more than two untagged sport fishing devices (no more than 50
hooks total) under the anglerÂs immediate control are allowed. Each
legal device more than two, up to 50 hooks total, must be tagged with
the anglerÂs name and address. If attached to a tree, the device must
be attached to the main trunk below the water line.
Cut and dry, no grey area they are not legal in Illinois

I would like to know the restrictions for the Alabama rig on Lake Michigan i see quite a few salmon fisherman fishing with more than two poles at a time but they are trolling.

So given the max 2 hook per line/lure rule, does that mean that jerkbaits with 3 treble hooks are illegal in Illinois? Or is that just seen as one lure?

Interesting question. Perhaps one we may not want an answer to.![]()
I'm going hypothetical on you tonight.....
Let's review: Illinois law says no more than 2 hooks or 2 lures tied to your line. With that said, what's your opinions on the following....legal or illegal (and explain why)
1. Is a 3 hook night crawler harness legal or illegal. The harness has 3 hooks tied to fishing line and you can't have more than 2 hooks tied to your line.....legal or illegal
![]()
2. Hypothetically speaking could you have a five jointed swimbait with a hook on each section....legal or illegal. You can't have 5 hooks on your Alabama Rig which (in my opinion) is basically a five section bait with a hook on each section.
3. Hypothetically speaking what if you piggy backed 10 trailer hooks on your spinnerbait....legal or illegal. You can't have 10 hooks on your Alabama Rig.
4. If I had 2 jointed jerkbaits tied to my line and the jointed sections on each bait were 10 inches apart (maybe separated by a 10 wire leader) so it basically looked like 4 baits (but in reality were just two long jointed jerkbaits)....legal or illegal
5. let's say I have ONE oversized treble hook rig (5 inch shank) and I had a grub connected with screw-locks on each of the 3 hooks (see pic)....legal or illegal

In conclusion...in my opinion in a court of law I think you could prove that the Alabama Rig is legal by the fact that it is one lure with 5 hooks attached, just like some of the examples above. To the best of my knowledge, the State of Illinois has no law concerning the number of hooks you can have on a bait, the size of a bait or how many jointed sections you can have on a bait. There law is mainly concerned with how many are TIED to your LINE.
To know the owl, you must know the mouse.....
from what I've read, a jerk bait (or any crankbait) is considered a single hook.
perhaps it has to do with the manufacturing of the bait considering the hooks come stock on the bait. as opposed to the A-Rig, you have to add your own hooks to it.
