    Lightning Gear Case ... Yes/No

Hi Guys, I just recently purchased a Checkmate with a 1999 Johnson 225 HO
J225HPLEEN. After reading a bit, I believe it has the Lightning gear case. I have attached a few pictures below .. looks like the water intake holes have been sealed on the sides with a lower intake in the bottom of the nose cone.

The previous owner had the power head "tweeked" a bit from the Evolution folks back in 2000, so I'm not sure if this is the Lightning gear case or something else.

    Thanks for taking a look

Re: Lightning Gear Case ... Yes/No (ChampioNman)

Thanks ... after seeing a picture of a Lightning gear case in the 2000 Johnson brochure I can see right away a difference ... no trim tab on the Lightning case for one thing.

I was thrown off a bit seeing that mine has those 2 raised sections (one on either side), in addition to the LWP which looks to be part of the lower unit. What might those 2 raised sections be ... perhaps the gearcase had some cosmetics (welding) done to it to hide the LWP hoses .. don't know ???. The other thing I notice on mine is that the skeg starts half way back on the lower portion of the unit which apears to be different than the standard.

Maybe just maybe the lower unit is some sort of "custom" unit, again don't know ??

Just found a picture of 1999 225 ho ... looks different than mine for sure ..

    Anyhow runs terrific ......

    Thanks

    Bruce

That's not a lightning case either. That is a stock case. If you goto http://www.shop.evinrude.com and look at a 225HGL lower unit you'll see what a lightning case looks like.

Re: Lightning Gear Case ... Yes/No (ChampioNman)

Just an update for what it's worth ... I just exchanged e-mails with the original owner who told me the gearcase was a unit designed and built by Evolution using their own nosecone.

ChampioNman, thanks for the link ... the last picture I threw up there was strictly comparing what a stock lower unit looked like compared to mine, which now I know was a custom unit by Evolution.

Thanks again guys, this is a terrific board with very very knowledgble people

    Bruce

    About the upside down question

Here's the scoop (The ChampioNman beat me to it )

That unit is a 2-pc Manual Set Back CMC # 55012... It is installed like the picture on the CMC web site although the sticker is on the other side of the unit which is maybe why you figure it's upside down. I went out and took a look and for sure it's installed as per the picture. In between the setback plate and the hydraulic jackplate is a set of Transom Wedges CMC # 20122.

I know it's not a "real" fishing boat but here's a picture of what that Johnson is pushing. This was from a recent Checkmate rally where about 12 Checkmates went for a 4 hour Joy Ride.

Re: Lightning Gear Case ... Yes/No (rude power)

Thanks ..You are absolutely correct ... they mounted that setback plate right to the top and it's difficult from that picture to tell what that is.

It goes really good with this "Tweeked" Johnson 225 HO ... the acceleration is unbelievable. The hull weighs just under 1400 lbs.

Thought we better add a picture or two of a Lightning Gear Case so that no one is disappointed if they do a search etc. Did some digging and found some ... pretty sure this is it
