I just bought a 1987 Procraft, 19.5' with an Evinrude XP150...carb problems?

Well, I did the Link and sync, I did not get to the timing.

My car is still broke down....my arthritis is kicking in.....but I plan to get it going tonight....then I can play with these carbs and Link and sync + timing.

I just didn't think adjusting the timing would be necessary...but I'm going to read the manual about that, and go from there.

I can also smell gas Big time...largely due to the fact that I believe the carbs are flooding..and the bottom carb intake gasket is missing, allowing fuel to leak into the "engine compartment"...what would be the term for that?

No intake carb gasket on one carb? Now who's fault is that, has your wife been around your motor? That's what happens to me. I was wondering if maybe you damaged the needle and seats when you set the level and drop. The wide open timing would not change if you did not adjust the timing screw. Read the idle timing section in your manual, this needs to be set when you sync and link. Championman can correct me but I think you loosen the carb cam follower, start motor, advance timing to correct timing, carbs should be closed, do not move the control handle, shut off motor and align the center of the cam follower with the small mark on the linkage. It is at this point that the timing and carbs should move at the same time. This is what your manual probably tells you but sometimes it gets confusing. I know about old auther, it's got me to.

No intake gasket on the bottom carb...you know when you put on the 1st part of the air silencer?

That was missing when I got to it. To be honest...I just noticed the 2nd time I put the carbs on. I am going to be buying a new one.

How would I damage the needle and seats? I did bend the float lever, but I was carefull not to put pressure on the needle and seats...Maybe I did and didn't realize.

Was there a small wire thing that clipped on the needle and the float, and did you get those on right? Sometimes just a tap on the carb with a screwdriver handle will unstick a needle. You should only pump the primer bulb until it is just hard, dont overdo it. Just grabbing at straws here and trying to help.

I did...boy those things are easy to lose!

I don't think the needle is sticking....and I do what you say for the primer bulb.

If gas is running out of a carb you must have a stuck open needle or incorrect float level.

It isn't "running out"...but with the silencer removed, and looking at the carbs, I can see that they are wet from fuel...seems to be flooding to me. I'll pull them apart and again and inspect everything I've done again...I can't see ANYTHING wrong with the jets or anything...I'll take hig mag photos and post them if possible.

I just reread all of your posts on this, including looking at the pictures of your dropped carb, one of the moderators might have experiance with this, but I wouldn't run that carb. It might be repairable if the small tube can be bent back in place, I just don't know. Is Championman sending you rebuilt carbs? I don't mind saying that he must be a great guy. He goes by the book. In the 80's and early 90's I was a certified Evinrude tech, I worked as a service manager and then bought the dealership. I sold my dealership in 1995 and retired. The dealership is still open today. I thought I would never get revved up again and then I found this board, fun, fun fun. OK, enough about me. I suspect that your probem is in your sync and link procedure. Did you read that link about the recirc. valves and VRO, lots of good info there for you.

With the silencer removed and looking into the carbs, you will see that the insides of the carbs are wet, you will see the inside of the silencer cover will be wet also, there is a drain at the bottom of the silencer to drain any excess fuel which may dump out of the carbs when you tilt the engine to full tilt when trailing your boat. However, you should "NOT" see any fuel spray out of the front of your carbs while the engine is running at any speed or load. But, the wet look inside the carbs is normal.

An update for those who care ;)

I have recieved the carbs from Championman....what a guy! (I could go on for pages thanking him....but I'll save everyone the read...LOL).

Anyway, the wonderful USPS aparently can't deliver a box without crushing 1/4 of it, and they damaged the Primer Fitting.

Luckily, I was able to hammer out one from one of my carbs, and hammer it into the carb I received from Championman.

I am going to install tonight (assuming I get home in time), and try to Test Drive it tomorrow. (9/24/09).

The misquitos are about the size of horseflies out there!!!

OK, new carbs installed. Having trouble with linc and sync.

Someone told me that the butterflies should be horizontal with earth...or 180 when wide open throttle.

The only way for me to do that...is to have the butterflies not completely closed under idle. The manual says they need to be 100% closed.

That is the correct orientation of the throttle plates at Wide open throttle (WOT).
