I am coming down to lake Oconee the last week of March from North Carolina. I have never seen this lake. What NC SC lake does it compare to? How much further along are the fish compared to Wylie or Norman? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks Guys

We had a lake house on Oconee, Sugar Creek Area. I would fish docks, seawalls, worms and small crankbaits, fish will be moving.

The way the weather has been they should be on beds by then. We will more than likely be getting some good rains so the water in the upper creeks and river will be muddy to a heavy stain likely. You should be able to catch em about anyway you would like to be honest, but if you will post back before you leave we will see if we can get you an updated report!![]()
What John said above will always get you some fish on Oconee as well!![]()

how is the fishing on oconee recently. i will be there tomorrow through saturday. any ideas?
Gr8 - do you know what area of the lake you will be staying on? Are you renting a home or staying at Sugar Creek, etc..? This will help with getting you a better report as Oconee actually fishes a little different in the different lake areas.
Will be in the area of old slem recreation area. I tried to google earth it but came up with nothing. I have read that there is some standing timber, and assume there are makers? I figured the fish will be on the banks, but just didnt know what to expect to be fishing. Does this area normally stay clear? Is there a floating worm bite or shaky head deal? From what I read there are alot of smaller fish in the lake hence the slot. Thanks for the help

These two links will give you a better idea of where you will be on the lake. This way you can better utilize Google Maps to help you out. The area around Oconee (like many areas in NC) has lots of red clay. Heavy rains will muddy up the lake. For the most part though it is a pretty clear lake. Shad color cranks, spinnerbaits, and shakey heads will work just fine.
Hopefully someone a little more local can give you a current fishing report...![]()
Try this on Google maps "old salem park, old salem road, greensboro, ga" follow the road to the lake it will dead end to the campground.
This part off the lake is fairly bad about staining to muddy, it is in the main river with a large catch basin coupled with rain and what Billy said about the red clay in the area makes it muddy at times.
Richland creek stays clearer 90% of the time than the oconee river side so if you do not like the water color go south it will clear up usually.
As for the trees they are fairly easy to navigate its not like you have to run thru them except in a few back creek areas, you will know when to back off when you get there. The oconee river down in the area you are in is safe if you go good ways north it gets hairy if you do not know it.
The fish will be in all stages of the spawn when you get there so stay in the shallows. White spinnerbaits, trickworm, crankbaits, jig, etc all will work depending on water as to what I would throw.
I will talk to a friend this evening who lives there to get you an update on the water and fish.![]()
