    Pops but won't Fire?

Johnson 115 j115gleoc. Replaced the voltage regulator after a meltdown occured a couple weeks ago, the flames burned some of the wiring going to the power pack and timing wheel. Replaced the wiring and everything looked good to go. Went to start motor and all it will do is pop but won't actually run. Pulled the plugs and they are sparking plenty out of the cylinders. could it be a timing issue?

It would be a good idea to visually inspect the stator under the flywheel since the voltage regulator flamed up on you. My bet is the stator will have a pool of melted insulation under it, even though it may test OK with a meter.

As for the popping, check the wiring for the correct cylinders.

Will check it out. also, should the timing roller be touching while in nuetral? I've read the post at the top of the forum, but it doesn't indicate if in nuetral. thanks

ok, I switched out power packs with a buddy who has the same motor and it took off right away but wanted to run WOT after it fired. I immediately shut the key off. This was repeated 2-3 times when the motor would start. The throttle plates are closed. could it be from loaded up cylinders just from trying to start it a few times unsuccessfully?

more than likely what you have is extremely lean running, from either an air leak, maybe from the fire that may have melted/distorted something, or a partially blocked carby jet, or worse case, a seal has been melted.
