1998 Fast Strike 150 - Any known problems?

I am considering a used Hawk with a 1998 150 Johnson Fast Strike outboard. I will certainly have it checked out by a shop before buying it, but am trying to do a bit of research before doing so.

Are there any common known issues with this outboard? Anything like large % of VRO failure, electronics, etc.??

Glad I found this board. I think I will enjoy visiting here.

I have one currently and it performs well. I know alot of guys around here that have been running them for years and swear by them. In my opinion its one of the best most powerful 150s omc ever made. If the compression checks out good you will probably be good.

Welcome to BBC! The 60* eagle motor is one of the best in the John/Rude line up and in fact the block configuration is still in use with the 60* E-tecs.

I have a 1996 Johnson Fast Strike 150. Great fast engine. Powerful. One thing my mechanic told me to keep my engine running longer was to run oil 100-1 mix in the gas tank. That way if your VRO pump stops working (even tho the horn goes off), you still will have oil in the gas. I use a synthetic oil that is specifically designed to run 100-1 pre-mix in outboard engines. He also told me to make sure that I changed the impeller water pump every year. The reason given was that this engine was one of the hottest running engines (a good thing not a bad one) and you always want to make sure you are getting plenty of water for cooling.

I agree with the others, this is one of Johnson/Evenrudes best 150 made. It is one of the lightest @ 370-375 lbs.
