    Fishing around Amelia Island

The family and I are going down July 17 to 24th to Ameila Island. Can anyone tell me where to fish and what to fish for. What to bring. Does anyone have a map card for Lowrance 520c that I could use or rent while there? Dont know what to expect.

    Thanks

Re: Fishing around Amelia Island (HDETERS)

I hear people catch flounder around fort clinch on the north end of the island. Or you could do some surf fishing. Also, on the south end of the island down past amelia island plantation there are some jetty rocks off the beach I see people fishing around in the summer time. Even see boats pull up to them and fish them.

Go see the guy at Hooks line and sinkers on 14th. Get you a couple dozen mud minnows and some standup jig heads. Use regular bass baitcast gear behind the fort. Fish the current breaks where the T shaped jetties stop the current. If you dont find the stand up jig heads just put them on a #4 circle hook setup like a c-ring using a 1 - 1 1/2 oz bullet sinker. If the first and last hour of each tide you will catch you limit of flounder and sometimes trout.

Re: Fishing around Amelia Island (rangerjason)

My friend told me you have to use circle hooks down there. Is that correct? What type of line, color ect.... He also told me to catch some sheep head with the kids, where can you catch them. I have a 19.5' Multispeci boat (couple of inches deeper than a bass boat) would I be able to go on the Atlantic on a calm day (or do I even need to with all the fishing inshore). Will it be possible to catch Tarpon?? Redfish??
Thanks for your time. Im excited as hell!

Thanks for all the input. Any other suggestions would be great. Are there any speed limits or anything in the canals?

You are bringing a boat? If so, my fishing advice will be very different.

Re: Fishing around Amelia Island (HDETERS)

Heres a copy of the tides at the end of cumberland for that week. All the fishing will be based on the tides. The times from this spot to fort clinch will be about 5 mins different. The fishing will be good to start but, as the moon gets bigger and bigger the tides will get higher than normal and lower than normal. This in turn will make the current faster and faster causing the water to get muddier and muddier. A incoming tide has clearer water so, I prefer to fish the incoming tides. Be very careful not to hit a sand bar or mudbar at low water times. For reds you are gonna want to fish around the oysterbars. The jetties are always a good place to catch a varity of species. If your good and the water cooperates you may be able to get around the jetties and cast net some pogies and look for Tarpon running the beach. You will need bigger than bass tackle for the larger fish. For rat reds trout flounder croakers tripletail, bass tackle is fine. But, a 15 pound red can spool your bass reel. Look for current breaks around shell bars and creek mouths. As the water rises the reds follow it in the small cuts following bait. Get yourself a GA. liscense and fish GA waters. The creel limits are higher. When you get here buy a map and call me. I will do my best to mark some worth while ares to try. I live in Kingsland. If you look a map you will see its in Camden county Georgia. Right on the border of Amelia Island (nassau County, FL). Been here all my life. I like to think I know a little about the fishing around here. I have a buddy who is on the water fishing around here 3 days a week. I promise we will get ya on some fish before you leave. Number is 912-552-4685.

Re: Fishing around Amelia Island (K-DAWG)

Wow, thats awesome. I appreciate all of the information. Should I buy some Gulp crabs and shrimp before I come. If so, what color works best. Is there anything else I should bring. I have a 6 foot casting net, not great at it but I have caught shad here in the lakes when they are balled up.

    Thanks again

Re: Fishing around Amelia Island (HDETERS)

I personelly have never used any gulp crabs. I have thrown gulp shrimp in new penny color but, there are lots of places to buy some if you need to. I almost always live bait fish when I fish in saltwater. There is some good fishing around here but, it can be tough at times. So, with that said hopefully we can get you some good fishing action while your here. You need to make sure you have a good anchor, maybe a pushpole but, thats not a have to have. Just give me a call when you get here and we can meet up and talk a little more in depth. Heres a copy of the web site for the tides in this area.

There is also good fishing on the golf course lakes. A good friends dad had a condo there and we would venture up to fish the golf course lakes quite a bit. Sometimes we'd catch 20 or so a trip. On one trip I caught two back to back cast that were both in the 10pnd class so dont be surprised if you get a good fish. Both those fish were spawning, you could see them chasing bait up and down the bank. We havnt been there in years though but the south end of the lake has a fountain and right before dark they would go to schooling. Also, right before dark the knats and other flying creaures get really bad, make sure you have bug spray.

Re: Fishing around Amelia Island (Manatee Mauler)

Also one of the ponds was connected to the ICW by a culvert. It was possbile to catch baby tarpon and reds. I want to say that pond was on the north western side of the island.... good luck. Its been at least 5 years since we've been up there so things may have changed. He closed his practice, sent his heart patients to other doctors, moved out of state and sold the condo.
