2008 ETEC 225HO Power Loss Problems

Sorry if post is lengthy but I wanted to give all details as some small detail here may be important to a tech reading my post. E225DHLSCH - s/n 05232575 warranty not in my name yet but will be very shortly if you check.

Was fishing a tournament last weekend and about 3/4 through day we came off plane, fished an area and when we started back up the motor instantly idled with a noticeable miss or issue like that. Motor sounded horrible and would not jump on plane. Checked it for operating sound again to see if it sounded mechanical, did not seem that way. Checked for wire problem etc on the water and no issue found. Started up engine and with partner on very front of bow we gradually pulled on to plane (about 1 minute) BUT only could get 3800 RPM max so I came back off plane and idled back to ramp about 5 miles away.

When I was back to the shop I used my timing light and ignition tester and found that all cylinders except #3 were firing properly. Cylinder #3 was showing firings of 1800 times per minute. Made sure coil etc was grounded good and rechecked, same thing. Was thinking plug or maybe coil.

Next morning I bought all new plugs, QC10WEP and indexed them after gapping to 0.30. Please note, from factory this engine had QC8WEP plugs but books and specs state QC10WEP plugs. Noted that all plugs were very carboned up except # 6 which was normal looking. I wrote this off as OK since the previous owner who ran it for three months or so had 67% of all run time at idle so new plugs were a good investment. Total time was 111 hours from previous owner. When I tested firing again all cylinders had proper firing (500 at idle) Was hoping that I had it as an easy fix.

Finally got back to lake yesterday for a prefish and this was the first time I had it out of garage since plug change. Let engine warm up as usual, did not sound completely right but I gave it a try anyways, was the same if not worse, actually bad enough to vibrate the engine and make me worry as the new vibration sounded like a rapid clunk clunk. To be safe I did let engine idle a fair bit off and on and tried it one more time to be absolutely sure, would not power up well and thinking of getting on plane was nothing more than a dream!

Tonight after work I removed plugs to test compression. Voila, all plugs were filthy black again after less than 30 maybe 40 minutes of idle run time etc. EXCEPT plug #6 (lower plug on port side) This plug looked brand new barring the little drop of oil on it. My thoughts are that I have a bad injector as my biggest issue, thoughts?

Compression was 120 on all cylinders though I will want to recheck with a better compression tester as mine has been around the block a few times.

Not sure why #3 fired badly.
Not sure why timing indicated 13 degrees at idle as I checked that as well.
Not sure why no code came up on my system check. When I checked the EMM I had three of the four lights lit up solid red. Looking at the EMM the top light was on, the second from the top light was off and the bottom two were on, no flashing lights with key on engine off.

Any other input or ideas? Concerns?

Motor has been booked into my closest shop for a scan Thursday AM, hope everything goes well for me and my engine.

Last thing, are the injectors on my 2008 different than those usd on an 2007?

Mark, get it to your dealer as you posted, no reason to guess about what is wrong.

Yeah, that is as clear as mud.

Like to help work things out and also keep involved, hence my questions.

Also going to look at the lift pump, I think it pulses off of cylinder 6 and if that diaphragm leaks it could throw the fuel back in there leaving me with that washed plug. A good friend of mine put me onto that and it is another thing to check out.

Will let you know what we find.

The lift pump work off cylinders 3 and 6, if the diaphragm leaks the engine will rev by itself.

Re: 2008 ETEC 225HO Power Loss Problems (hoss15)

I'll be at the shop tomorrow morning at 7:45 AM, will start working on it then and hopefully we can find someting out for sure. Still thinking injector but the scan will hopefully tell me the full deal.

BTW, found the diagnostic LED's on the EMM are currently indicating an injector/ignition fault so I am fully expecting codes tomorrow morning.

Well, looks like I will be getting a couple injectors replaced. Just glad to have it confirmed and diagnosed even though I now have to go from a 225HO Triton to a 40HP Johnson 4 stroke Lowe this weekend for my second biggest tournament of the year. BRP was involved with the tech and we are now just waiting for the parts to get shipped in from the US.

btw, I had said #3 per firing but it is actually 4, that is if my info is correct, starboard is 1,3,5 and port is 2,4,6. Everything seemed good there though, just the codes for the injectors.

Looking forward to getting the parts installed and taking a run down the lake for a test.

Mark - did that fix your problem?

i found out it was injector #3. they should get it back together for the weekend, then i can test drive.
