Attn: Users of Orange/Lochloosa and Lake Santa Fe

I attended a meeting today where the local residents of these lakes want to stop all bass boats from using the lakes. They are citing unsafe operations due to extreme speed and the over use of the lakes.

Please voice your opinions.....take the online survey. The next meeting is set for May 12th, 2007 @ 1:00 PM.

    Re: (Mickstix)

Usually these kind of actions/remarks by "residents" are by those who have lived there a relatively short period of time. And usually don't have a clue that these bodies of water have been used by florida residents for many decades.
Also, their claims, as mentioned, are usually a grasping at straws effort to get their way.
As they probably already know, that they do not own the water, nor can they deny access to those members of the public that wants to use them.
Unless that is, they can come up with some assinine excuse to attempt to accomplish their goals.

As an afterthought, I wonder just how many of them are personal watercraft users and have been guilty of doing the ever popular harrassment of fishermen by the incessant coming very close so as to mess up the fishing?? We all have seen this on just about all the waterways we fish.

who held this meeting anyway??????i would love to contact them...i cant belive that they would be so ignorant as to put up a survey to ban bass boats from a lake...thats probably why its closed...how many ski and speed boats do they think are on sante fe???? you cant ban one certain type of boat from a public lake...and i am sick of people who buy property AROUND a PUBLIC body of water trying to get laws passed to stop me from using the waterways that i PAY to use...

Re: Attn: Users of Orange/Lochloosa and Lake Santa Fe (ldbass55)

The survey will be re-opened.... I will keep you posted. The problem is the fact that the ex-mayor of Gainesville lives on Lake Santa Fe, and likes to swim across it at 6:30 AM, and feels that his fear of getting run over by "High Speed Bass Boats" is keeping him off of the water and that this is a violation of his rights.

This group is a committee that is funded by the Alachua County Commission and has received a grant from FWC and the state of Florida. We had three representatives at this meeting, a local angler representing the non-tournament anglers, a member of the Bassmasters of Gator Country (Representing local tournament anglers), and myself (representing the The Florida Bass Federation, a state tournament group). There were also members from the sierra club, canoers, kayakers and residents of the waterways in Alachua county.

They have spent over $ 40,000 on this committee and the budget appears to be near 400k. I would fully expect some type of regulations to come from this, and I will keep you all posted if you would like.

Here are the issues discussed today.

    Re: (Mickstix)

i am just pure sick of this kind of crap......we as boat owners and fishermen pay a ton of user fees....TAXES...to use these public waterways....and the fwc gives these people a grant to do a study to ban bassboats on a lake????? thats just pure stupid.....you cant just ban one type of boat...so there's more of our tax dollars going to waste...let's spend it on improving our ramps...and while were at it lets study why all our lakes are going dry in that area....all of the guys on this site need to send an e-mail to the fwc, and the governor....i know i am... jason...could you please post the e-mails for the people that need to be contacted on this issue....3 fishermen wont get the job done against 400k...

    LD,

I fully agree, and if you were at this meeting you would have lost it.... the sierra club was against everyone there Airboats, Bass Boats, and water skiers. And they wanted 30" FL numbers put on each side of our boats so that they could call the FWC when they witnessed a violation. They said they couldn't read our FL numbers when we were going 60 mph past them.

Look at the picture below, you will see a member of the federation putting blue dots next to the issues we tried to highlight. Each group was given 20 blue stickers to place on the boards. In typical fashion our groups figured out how to make it work by putting several dots on certain items, rather than one per item. This helped our vote sound like a bigger crowd.

There shouldn't be any problem with their patrolling.................as long as it is just that, and they aren't there as this ex-mayors personal police.

Yep, I have no problem with the FWC patrolling the waters and upholding the laws that are in place.. But if they start looking for stuff to nit pick against bassboats that'll be bogus..

There were some allegations of Bass Boats running too closer to PWC, Canoes and Kayakers. Also some were identified as drinking and driving...

I think what upsets me about some of the comments made is the general bucketing of "All Bass Boats are doing this", when you know as well as I do, some of us are great and the rest are the issue....

The meeting on May 12th is a Noise meeting, they are supposed to send some emails before then, I will keep you posted.

Bassboats running too close to PWC?? Holly cow if that aint the pot callin the kettle.. I think every teenager to ever jump on a PWC runs straight for the nearest boat so they can "show off" of something?? Same thing with water skiiers.. Have the whole lake to play in, yet they run right up next to the fishin boats like we want to see them doing a 360* or somethin..

    Re: (trashy)

The link is working now. I went in and filled out their survey. We all need to do that - at least - to make sure our side of these issues is heard. Otherwise they will/might legislate us off the lakes!!!

I also signed up for email notification so, if possible, I may attend one of their meetings. Though not a resident of the county I use the lakes there like a lot of other people and pay taxes just like everybody else too.

We need to enforce the laws we have, not make up new ones!!
