I am new to this board and I am curious as to what problems Ficht owners have experienced with these motors.
I recently purchased a 98 Javelin 389 with a 97 175 Johnson Ficht that has 50 hours with no problems yet. What do I need to look for and what regular maintence shoud be performed

Dont know too much about them but I remember that they had a problem with carbon build up around 50 hours so the first thing you might wanna do is run a shock treatment of sea foam through it. You can get it at any auto parts store.

I would suggest you run XD-50 oil and decarb once a year with BRP Engine Tuner, follow directions on the can, also change the gearcase lube at least once a year depending on how many hours you run.
The spark plugs will need replacement also at least once a year, again this will depend on the hours you run and at what RPM.

Yes, there have been problems with these motors, if you can post the serial number I can get the warranty history.
This motor was purchased by Mr Rose in Owensboro KY on 3-31-97.
There have been no claims filed during the warranty period.

I'm amazed too!!! A 97 FICHT with 50 hrs!!!!! If you take care of that engine and keep it clean and run the xd-50 it will make you very happy!!!!
Use carbon guard in every fueling, 2+4 fuel treatment, ED 50 oil, engine tuner twice a year and your engine will serve you for years to come. Ive ran 150 Evinrude Ficht since 1998 with those additivies and my engine is clean and lean.
If there's nothing wrong with that motor now, trade it in or sell it. Not meaning to burst your bubble but 50 hours is not that much and I personally have had a lot of problems with that year motor (as have just about everybody I spoke with with model years in the nineties). In the meantime, I would second the advice for regular use of carbon guard, fuel treatment, ram oil, engine tuner (I'd do it quite a bit), and lots of fresh spark plugs. Also, don't idle the motor too much, it doesn't like extended low rpm usage!
For what its worth, it took a while to win me back, but I have a Ficht again and have been relatively satisfied so far. Best of luck.
