Question for you guys living around the Birmingham area

We will be moving down there this summer and my wife was looking at some houses. Found new houses in the fultondale area and some nice newer houses around the oxmoor and homewood area. Do you guys have any suggestions on which would be the better areas? Thanks.

I personally would rather live in Fultondale because I'm not an inside the city type of guy. Homewood is very nice. I would do more of the Homewood area than Oxmoor though. Fultondale is nice, but if you work downtown traffic might not be that fun. Schools are better in Homewood if that matters.

The best way to look at it is, fultondale is closer to the Tennessee River chain. Homewood is closer to the Coosa chain. Just my opinion.

Do you, or are you planning to have kids? Fultondale is definitely a growing area, and its moving in the right direction, but there are drawbacks. One is the school system; not bad, but not great either. My best friend is desperately trying to sell his house in Fultondale because his daughter is getting close to starting school. He is wanting to move just down the road to Morris or Kimberly for what he believes to be a better school system. He is putting her in private school if he cant get the house sold. Another one is a lot of areas in Fultondale are on the city sewer system, and that can be quite expensive. Since you are not from the area, I don't know if you're aware of what a fiasco the sewer debt crisis has been around here. I would definitely look for a house with a septic system. As stated earlier, I would definitely choose Homewood over Oxmoor. Homewood is more urban and trendy, and the school system is a good one. I don't really know how to say it, but Homewood is considered a more "cultured" or "highfalutin" area by the rest of us rednecks around the metro area. Personally if it were me; I would go for something in Shelby or Saint Clair county (Better schools and lower taxes). If I wanted to stay in Jefferson, I would look in Gardendale, Morris, or Kimberly area on the north side. Leeds on the east side. Hueytown, Pleasant Grove, or McCalla on the west side. No matter where you choose, you're never too far from the Coosa, Warrior, or Tennessee Rivers.

well i was born and raised ont he county line (jefferson/blount). so i would tell oyu to check out the hayden/corner area. i do not live there now, but still got family there. just my 2 worthless pennies worth. by the way, blount county taxes are cheaper than jefferson county.
