warning horn stays on instead of 1or2 seconds 1991 evinrude 175

hi guys looking for a little help with this one.when you turn the ignition key to the start position and you usually get the 2second warning horn test, my horn stays on.note this is with motor still not running.once started the horn still stays on.i can get it to stop sometimes by working key on and off.its like a relay sticking closed/open somewhere.i have tried contact cleaner etc inside ign switch. but still problem persists.thanks in advance..

Sounds like a bad horn. To be sure unplug all of your tan wires one on each cylinder head, the VRO harness and the vacuum switch under the air box, and the low oil harness in the port side belly pan. Turn the key to on if horn persist then bad horn. If not plug each one in one at a time to find the offender.

Any of the sensors could be the problem but two common culprits are the oil level sensor, unplug the oil tank wires at the motor, and the fuel restriction vacuum switch in the front of the motor.

They are all tan wires. To find the oil tank sensor follow the harness from the back of the boat to the port side belly pan it should be a 2 wire plug black and tan wires. For the vacuum switch remove the 4 rubber straps that hold on the box and look next to the VRO you'll see a round white plastic valve that has two wires coming out the back disconnect that tan wire. The VRO harness is just below it and has 4 wires, with one tan wire in that bundle.

Your 1991 oil tank wires at the motor may also be just black "zip cord" with a ground terminal on the motor and a connection to a tan wire from the engine harness. They changed things over the years.

not sure if you tried this,

if the horn is going off disconnect the tan wire at the horn..

if the horn keeps sounding the horn is faulty.
