Question 1996 175 johnson fast strike will not turn over

hey guys. I was at the lake this weekend and went to go fishing on my javelin 389 Sunday morning and I couldn't get my engine to start. normally the boat starts right up and is very responsive to the key being turned. I heard the flywheel spinning but the engine would not start. I got a pair of jumper cables, put them to my trolling motor battery and she cranked right up. used the boat all day and evening as well and then docked it and returned the next morning to the same problem. turned the key, heard It spinning but would not engage and start. I hooked back up the jumper cables but this time that would not work either. seems to me maybe my Bendix is not engaging the flywheel. last time I had seen a problem like this was when a friend with a 60 hp evenrude. we sprayed dry lube on his bendex and found a loose connection at his battery terminals. ive checked my battery terminals and everything is tight. only thing I see is that maybe the cranking cord to the battery is getting a bit oxidized and brown. this boat has been good and ran well all weekend, would love to figure out why I cant get her to crank over now. anybody have this problem before or know how I can fix this? please and thank you

start with the obvious, check the battery to make sure it is good, clean and
tighten all connections.Get rid of the wing nut on the ground cable.Check
the voltage at the starter especially when cranking. If you have a dash mounted
volt gauge watch to see where it drops at crank(ing speed. If all that is good
then i would check starter.Bendix could be bad, dirty or it could be the starter is
worn out and just not spinning fast enough to engage it.
personally i like to put the engine cables on the studs alone then i use
these adapters for the small wires.I don't use wing nuts on anything.

got the engine to fire up last night, not exactly sure was wrong with it, disconnected a few plugs, connected them again, chocked it real good and got her to fire right up. why do you not like using wing nuts? should I replace the wing nut with a regular nut like the positive wire has?

Johnson/Evinrude has not used wing nuts on cranking batteries since at least 1981. They can loosen on you and cause expensive electronic components to get fried. Use stainless steel lock washers and stainless steel hex nuts or nylon insert stainless steel hex nuts.
