Johnson 175 Problems.... Please Help

I have a 2000 johnson 175 on my Javelin. I began having problems last week and am rather concerned.. So it begins, I was running across a lake and 3 or so miles in the motor gets a loss of power/ RPM's goes from 5500 to 4000 @ WOT. I continue the tourny with trouble getting on plane all day and only being able to turn 4000 R's once again.... next morning initial run across the lake very good until 3 or 4 miles in and again the same problem..... now it has barley enough power to put up on plane. and it idles somewhat rough with some vibration.. I have spark in all 6 cyl. I have good compression I have replaced the fuel filter pulled out all the gas and replaced with fresh gas. checked and changed my plugs. I have read I t could be the stator, but too much money to throw parts at it. any ideas.

Have you pulled a gear case drain plug?

as in the lower unit???? No. I might add while i was running across the lake after the motor lost power it occasionally had little jolts of power but never came back completely.

Sounds like you have an ignition problem, stator, EET or pack.

First choice is the pack but that would be a check it, dont just buy one.

how would one go about checking the pack? and is this the coil pack you mean or the power pack?

Power pack and you may want to have a technician test it.

Sounds identical to the problem I had this morning. Did you ever find the solution?

No, not yet the I left it in the hands of the professionals, currently my motor is apart and being looked at. but after a day of looking the mechanic is still unsure?????????? as soon as I figure it out I will let you know. kinda worried about having to drop some major coin on this thing.

ok. I had some confusion when talking to the tech yesterday. Upon doing a routine inspection on the motor he found major damage to my lower unit and is wondering how it was still functioning. (Pinion Gear and Forward gear damaged) . He is rather positive it is a power pack issue but has to finish the lower unit before lake testing. I'd have brought you the boat but gas @ $3 a gallon and you being 800 miles away doesn't figure into the budget but thanks.

oh. yes it is a johnson/evinrude certified tech looking at the motor.

Mike I think the "a" should have another word like (is) or a letter in there and I know you read slow.
