    Shifting gears problem

My Evinrude DI from 2004, E250FPLSRA has a problem.
Shifiting into forward or backward is easy but back from those gears into neutral is almost impossible with the engine running. It takes a lot of energie and I'm afraid to brake things. When the engine is not running shifting in and out of gears is very easy.

Put in a new cable and new shift lever, but no solution.

Read in the manual about the "Shift Interrupt Switch" but if this switch or circuit fails the EMM activates the Check Engine light. And that does not happen.

Could it be that the RPM's at idle are to high? Read 600 when the engine is warm but that's an analoge meter, so not exact. Can I put those RPM's down a little? Have the software version 1.2.1.5 and the cable.

Thanks in advance for all ideas and answers.

The lower unit was renewed in januari this year completely with the oil, since than I've only used the engine for a few hours due to the shift problem.

Where the shift cable is connected to the engine there is a sort of round plate which touches a switch. My Evinrude mechanic removed this switch saying: "it stops the engine running when shifting gears and you don't need it anyway because you have the Kobelt 2030 gear lever. It's only for safety so you don't fire the engine while in gear".
Two questions: is this true? And what is this switch called, it has a black and a black and yellow wire?

    Re: (markmuld)

That is called a shift interrupter switch. Never heard of a Kobelt 2030 shift lever must be a European thing. Here is something you can do to see if it is the gear case or the control. Remove the prop and start the motor on cooling muffs. With the shift cable disconnected use the shift linkage on the motor to shift it in and out of gear. If it shifts smoothly then the problem is a cable or the control box.
