HO and non-HO
What is the difference between a 200 etec and a 200 HO etec?
Weight? Size? Actual HP? Top end?
My boat has a 175 ficht now and when I repower, I will think about a 200. The boat is rated for 200 max, but I don't want a huge engine on there. I am usually boating in rough seas and so forth. So the added weight is ?????.
Would it be a big step up from a 175 ficht to a 200 HO????

By the way the ficht seems to be running good with all the help from this board. The temp issue (running cold) seems to be fixed, and with a hotter engine at troll and idle and with the good decarb i did and now using XD100, the plugs should not foul, and the engine should run better longer. I am floating this weekend and going to give it a good WOT run to clean the rest of the crap out. I'll change the plugs after I put about 30 gallons through the engine with some more seafoam. Hopefully that will be it and all problems solved. We shall see !!!!

Well, the 200 ETEC is a 2.6L motor (same as your 175). A small increase in performance over what you currently have. I have read here that its really about a 195 hp motor. The 200HO is a 3.3L motor and puts out OVER 200 hp. Pushing the 10% "rule" would put it 215-220 hp. Also, MUCH more torque out of the big-block 200. So to answer your question, YES IMO it would be a big step up performance wise going from your 175 to a 200HO ETEC
They also have a higher performance Lower-unit, but depending on what you rig it on may actually hinder top-end due to its increased length (excess drag). These are better suited for higher propshaft heights like on a bass-boat.
What type of boat?
200HO weight: 20" shaft 503 lbs. 25" shaft 518 lbs
2.6L 200 weight: 418-433 lbs

I did the exact change yo are looking at on a 19 foot ranger. I went from a 175 ficht to a 200 HO etec. I did not gain more then 2 mph top end, but the hole shot and torque is a night and day difference. The etec has been trouble free and started every time I turned the key so far, couldnt be happier in the 2+ years Ive had it!

The boat is a Proline 21 WA. (needs 25" shaft)
I guess I had this reversed, I thought the HO was a smaller block but with more power/output, and the non-HO was the larger block.
My ficht weighs 410, adding the big block is 100 pounds extra, I not sure that would be a good idea.
So I might get a bit better performance out of the 200 with adding only 20 pounds max...me thinks this is a wiser option. Although the boat would screw with that big block on there.

Based on the previous reply, I would expect you would get a much bigger difference in both top end and hole shot, especially on a bass boat.

I agree, i had thought the same, but I havent played with the set up at all and have the same prop on it, a 24 raker. I am right at the rpm limit, or right below, so I figure it was good enough for me!

What model of Ranger braineredbass? I would have expected more top end difference. If you don't mind, what prop and RPM, speed are you showing? Also, propshaft height makes a difference. The Lightning (or whatever they call it now) case on all the HO's would hinder topend if you run your lower-unit burried pretty deep. More drag equals less mph.
Van, if you are looking to step up in performance (all around performance) I would still thenk the HO would be the better choice. Otherwise you will be spending a lot of money for just a little gain over your current motor.

I have a 1998 R93, running a 24 OMC Raker, rpms about 5750 running with a light load, but with gas tanks filled plump full hitting 67.6. I am 2.75 below pad.
