Battery Cables for the trolling motor

One of the few thing which reamins to be done on Blackie is replacing or mending the cables running from the batteries to the trolling motor. My question is why are there two sets of red and two set of black? To the best of my memory, there only one balck and one red used. Does Chub run a spare set of cables? If he does But I still think I should replace and mend the cables. (?)

I have 2 reds and 2 blacks running up front and all are used. One set for each battery on the 24v setup. all terminate on the marinco trolling motor female plug.

You can pull one set to save some weight.. You'll just need a different connector.. I've been running mine like that (one set of wires) for two seasons now without an issue...

The plug just makes it 24v for the trolling motor versus just having 1 set of wires and the batteries wired for 24v.

Bro the plug has the jumper in it to make 24v. if you didn't have the plug they were jumped at the batterys.

Re: Battery Cables for the trolling motor (flwillie)

The reason they had two sets of wires running up front was that a good number of Trolling Motors were 12/24 volts and consisted of a switch on the foot petal that switched them from 12 volts to 24 volts. Now days we have most all the Trolling Motors using 24 volts. All you need to do is run two heavy cables to the front and connect them to the plug for the troller. Mine uses the wide locking bar which is at the top on mine and the on just below it or on the left. The locking bar gets the positive cable and the left on the negative cable. The batteries get a short cable from the positive post on one to the negative post on the other and then your your positive cable to the positive post on one battery and the negative cable goes on the negative post of the other battery giving you 24 volts up front for your trolling motor. Your Three bank charger gets wired with one set of wires on the starter battery then one set on one trolling batter and the other set on the other batters. Do not cut or shorten these charging cables as they need to be this length and each has it's own fuse. I figured I might as well post the whole system now and get you started in the right direction.

Re: Battery Cables for the trolling motor (NixaMan)

Thanks a bunch Gary............I ran 4 gauge black and red. Jumper the blacks together and the reds together at the plug. I'll tie the postive and negative at the battery. That's pretty much the way it was.................... Thanks, everyone for your help.
