    Decarbing while Docked

If I wanted to decarb by engine, would there be any environmental issues if I did this while my boat is docked? I have read a number of posts on how to decarb...use the maintenance port, follow directions, wait 16 hours, then run it. Just wondering if I can do it right in the lake vs. pulling it out, then hooking up muffs.

Steve, I decarbed mine in the driveway and then went to the lake next morning and ran the snot out of it to clean it out... There should be no concerns to run it in the lake - actually I think it's better than running on the muffs to get all the crap blown out.

One piece of advice - take a new set of spark plugs along and swap them out after a little run time... I have a set I use for decarb only and then I put in a new set.

It removes carbon deposits inside your engine.

I would decarb in the driveway and then run it on the lake. I would not wait until the next day to run on the lake. Letting it sit overnight will allow the carbon to harden up. You want to expel all of this while it is soft. Hard carbon can do cylinder/piston damage. The best thing to do is use products that prevent excess carbon. Waiting until it builds up and then removing it is not the best practice and certainly not the best thing for an engine. Use a quality carbon preventive additive from any of the MFG’s as well as a fuel treatment. Pri-G works excellent in concert with a carbon guard additive as well.

I agree, bring a set of plugs. Once you have an hour or so on it a new set of plugs is a good idea.

Not to be argumentive but letting is soak overnight softens the carbon. Use BRP engine tuner and follow directions on the can.

Carbon is at its softest right after treating while the engine is still warm. Allowing the engine to go cold will allow the carbon to gel and some of the carbon to re-harden. Many of the combustions chamber cleaner products warn against allowing it to sit more than a few hours. Best time to run the engine is while it is still warm. Personally I would not allow it to sit overnight.

+1 on letting it soak when using BRP engine tuner. Read the instructions on the can.
