Got my hands on a ASX Stratos

I was boat shopping this year and seen that yellow ASX listed on the BBC boats for sale boards and I couldn't resist. I was looking for one a lot newer but I'd always wanted one of those rigs ever since they were new. Plus, this thing looks better than most 2010 or 2011 used boats would already look. It only has about 150 hours on it and I kid you not, the only scratch I found on the boat I rubbed half of it out with my finger and a little buffing compound on the rest and it was gone in seconds. The whole boat still feels like your running your hands down a brand new boat. It come with the 225 HO Rude, hydraulic plate, 101 MK, 520 Lowrance in the dash, a 4 blade (I think it is a 30 pitch), Hydromotive, and the original 3 blade 29 ASX prop. But I was just blown away at how clean that thing is. You can look at the keel guard and tell its never touched a thing.

Plus, the guy that had it spent a bunch of money on custom yellow tinted stars and stripes motor graphics to match the hull and all the hoses to the steering and jackplate are all custom colored to match. Its an older boat than what I originally wanted but condition wise I don't think I could have found a cleaner used boat. So I'm pretty pleased with it.

My only problem right now is I'm trying to figure out how to get all my electronics on it. I'm trying to get both a 1198 HB and a HDS 10 at the console. Then two more matching 10's up front to go with each of those. Those 2 up front are easy, its those back two that are giving me fits. If anyone has any ideas to get those to fit and what mounts to use please let me know. If I can get those lined out I'll be a happy camper.

Also, any words of wisdom or advice about these. I've not had a boat this fast. I just know in 03 I wanted one so bad I couldn't see straight but the cost was out of my league then and when I seen this one that said showroom condition I jumped on it. I'll post some pics as soon as I have a free day to pull it out and take some.

But if anyone has any advice for anything, specially mounting those big electronics please let me know. Or any words of wisdom about the ASX in general I'd be interested to here.

Thanks guys, I'll have to change my boat in my pic now. This one is a tad more bright yellow.

Re: Got my hands on a ASX Stratos (Dan200xl)

    Thanks guys,
Haven't gotten to quite stretch it all the way out yet. I do know it is going to be fast. I took it for a spin but it was too rough to open it up. I was playing around watching that fuel flow meter and where it got the best fuel mileage. Its absolute best was at like 40 something and almost 6 mpg, or something right in that area, I didn't pay that much attention, but what was cool was I could cruise at the same speed my old 201 topped out at loaded which was 74-76 depending on the load and current, and I could cruise at that speed and it was almost at peak fuel economy. Just a little below what it was down around the 40 mph range. So that's going to be awesome to be cruising to save gas and still be running that fast.

I may leave that 520 in the dash just to keep that fuel flow and engine management stuff going. I don't know if the same system the 520's used will hook up to the new HDS's or not. I've been running humminbirds too long now to stay caught up with what will hook up to what on a Lowrance.

I'm anxious to stick that 3 blade prop on there and catch a decent day to really stretch it out and see what its really got and what its really made of. There's not a doubt in my mind that it can hit the 80 mark. And I can't imagine it not hitting the 80 mark even tournament loaded. When I was running it at about 75 it still felt like it had a lot left in it. I wasn't even trimmed out yet and I hadn't felt it lift and rise up onto that second step of the running pad yet, and I just still had a lot of throttle left to go and hadn't touched the jackplate.

So I really think it will be an 80 mph tourney loaded boat. If its not I'll be shocked. Even if it doesn't its an ASX and I've always wanted one, so I'm happy.

That one from that Jasper River Run you posted sure looks like its hauling butt. I'd like to know exactly what they should be capable of running to have an idea if I'm set up good or not. But it should be a fun boat regardless of what it runs.

Congrats on the ASX! That's a really sharp looking boat. I was actually looking at the one you bought but it just wasn't the right time for me to get a new boat.

You should be able to hit the 80 mph mark and beyond with it. I have heard that the ASX is a drivers boat and that it is weight sensitive because of that narrow pad. If you put too much in it the boat won't get up on that "second" pad. Your best speed is probably going to be with that 29p ASX 3-blade as these were made for the ASX specifically. The propeller was made by Turbo and is basically a TXP with some tweaks. If your looking for more speed I'm sure Mark over on the props page can get a little more out of that prop.

In case you want more info on the ASX here's a nice BWB article for ya

Re: Got my hands on a ASX Stratos (rchavis)

I'm going to try to start mounting my electronics tomorrow evening. So hopefully that will work out and I'll pull the cover off and actually take some good pics for all you. All it needs is the carpet re-fluffed with the vacuum and it will look slick as a new one. The previous owner took immaculate care of this rig, I have to tip my hat to them for protecting and preserving it so well. I had seriously looked at used 2010 boats that were in no where near as good of shape as this one. So my hats off to the previous owner. Took excellent care of it plus added some very trick accessories. Sad part is that all the secret spots I did have are gone, cause if you get within a mile of this boat its bright enough there is no missing it. I'd swore I would never own a yellow boat because of that but I have to eat some words cause this boat was one I'd always wanted and just too nice to pass up.

Congrats Chad! I am a little envious. You have a very special and unique boat.

Makes me wonder since these were made pre- 250HO ETEC what one would do with a 250HO AND the HP gearcase that was made or the HO's that never went production. I thought gearcaseman or someone on the Evinrude Forum had a stock-pile of them???? ALso surpised with the 36v TM. THese things were pretty light. You could prolly get by with an 80 lb thrust 24v system and ditch the 3rd battery (keeping the weight down a little)

Looking forward to pics of your boat

Todd Morgan at C&O Marine set up an ASX with a 250XS and a custom sportmaster gearcase and got it to 88 mph with a 29p ASX prop

As for that HP gearcase that never went into production... there was a BWB mag article where Evinrude tried to run that gearcase in a motor comparison. It was alot faster than the lightning gearcase but they had problems with the bearing carrier and heat or something to that effect...there's a reason it didn't make production

Lets see some pics of her all cleaned up nice

Re: Got my hands on a ASX Stratos (mittenbass)

I didn't make it to working on the electronics today. A case of the flu has kept me down all day. I'd of had to die to feel better. So hopefully I'll feel better tomorrow.

For the person that asked about my electronics reasoning, its going to be a 1198 Side Imaging Unit, a 1158, straight sonar/gps combo to link with the SI and go up front. Both those are all 10' screens. Then there will be 2 HDS 10's, a gen 2 at the console and the original HDS up front since I don't need the new structure mapping up front. So there will be a total of 4 10's and there is also a 520 in the dash that is hooked up to that engine management system. Depending on how I have to mount my 10's at the console I may or not keep the 520 or be able to keep the 520 in the dash, and I don't know if that engine stuff will hoodk up to the HDS unit in case I need to take the 520 out. I'd really like to keep that all going cause its nice to see where your getting your best fuel mileage.

As for why I'm putting all these on there, I guess one of the best reasons I can give is because I've all ready got almost all of them, with the exception of the gen 2 Lowrance 10, and I'm one of those guys that has really seen how important electronics are. To me it is the very most important thing on the boat. I couldn't fish without my HB's and this year I just wanted to do a comparison with the Lowrances.

About the gearcases and the motors, I usually don't buy a boat that is not in warranty and I was able to stay far enough under budget with this boat that should something serious happen it will have a new 250XS sitting on the back and be done with it. The hull and interior is virtually a new boat, and really the motor is close with only 150 hours, it just doesn't have that new motor warranty. So if something major happens I see a big bad XS sitting on the back. Hopefully that HO will run good though and not be an issue for a long time.

    Re: (jameson93)

If you have the Lowrance Engine interface cable (which I assume you do for it to show on the 520) it should work on the HDS units with no problem as long as they are on the network.

Curious as to why a 250xs (now actually the 250 "Sport Xs")? They aren't any stronger than the Pro Xs. Not sure if the ASX will need a Sportmaster. Go different and put a 250 SHO on it! You would be one-of-a-kind!
