They "chirp" (pretty loud) when there's fish under the sonar. Lots of fish might get annoying to have to listen to.
Before ordering new units, be sure to get the model with Volume control knob

Hi Mike.
Chirp pings on multiple frequencies allowing for greater target separation. I have read that it helps with fish holding really close to the bottom. I have a new total scan chirp ducer on a gen 3 hds 12..I've only played with it a little, but the images are pretty good. Lot of good threads in the sonar forums if you use the search function.

using the "multi-plex" pattern Danny "Woo-here, woo-here" I also set it for the fish to swim from the right-to-left on the screen, I even tried turning the boat around to see if that would help, I have spent days on the phone with technical service, bout ready to go back to a rock and rope, and some primer cord

I have a lowrance unit that I use on my trolling motor and it makes a difference when fishing vertical. It works great on lakes with a clean bottom and very little vegetation. I turn it off on most of the waters I fish because they are really heavy with vegetation.
I also talked with the Garmin reps last weekend at a fishing show because I have heard their chirp is much better than the birds and the lowrance units. The rep explained that lowrance only uses 5 frequencies and Garmin uses 85 so they obviously get a much clearer signal. I would suggest looking at the Garmin units if chirp is something you really want. I will be looking into the 93sv echomap in the near future which is also compatible with the pan optics sonar and the new transducer dropped $500 and it's smaller.

Take a look at the raymarine dragon pro, amazing chirp tech

bottom line is yes, if it's real chirp. they are not all created equal

So, any of you that went with a chirp unit regret it?
I think the new secret color is "A-Rig"..........
I figure you'll regret it if you don't, it will always be in the back of your mind. My Onix has chirp but my Helix 10 does not. I use my Helix the most as its at the bow and I'm looking at it constantly; do I wish it had CHIRP yes do I survive without it yes but I would still get a fuzzy feeling inside if I had it. Trolling over flooded timber loaded with crappie I just get a big red blob on 2d with a hint or two of arches I feel like if I had CHIRP the fish arches would show up more.
My Helix 9 has it as does my Hook 9. I like it.
