    Thinking of New Graphs

    Hello all,

I have a fish and ski that currently has two smaller hummingbird units on it. One is the GPS/Sonar combo at the driver seat the other is just a color unit on the bow. I a thinking of upgrading and maybe switching to garmin units. I have seen the Garmin Striker unit and I am thinking of getting something along those lines for the boat. I might have matching front and rear.

I'll admit, I don't know much about graphs or how to use them. I am looking for very user friendly models with short learning curves so I can use them to full capability. I am hoping learning how to use a graph can really improve my fishing.

You won't find any others easier to navigate through the menus than Garmin. Not knowing your budget, I'd look into the 73sv for the bow and a 73cv for the bow.

Budget I'm not sure of yet. I would like to have some good units that will last me a while. I think I can dump my old units on craigslist and get a little bit of money towards the new ones. We are currently in the process of moving, so it might strain my budget a little right now, but I can plan and save up.

I keep hearing that but this 93 sv is a PITA compared to others. To many things that require a second window to open. Someone needs to make a list of functions that fisherman actually use and send it to their programmers. For example on the Panoptix you have to go menu-sonar setup- to make changes that affect the returns. Then you have to go back-back instead of one back taking you to the main screen again. That isn't what I call intuitive or easy. Unless I'm missing a shortcut key somewhere.

I agree with the keystroke thing. Yeah, the menu's are simple and easy to understand, but, no shortcuts that I've found yet.
I think the new secret color is "A-Rig"..........

When you are within multiple layers of the menus, you can simply hit Menu to close it instead of selecting Back, Back, Back.....

The strikers will give you gps and allow you to mark waypoints routes and trails, but won't give you any lake maps. If that's not important to you then that might be a pretty good option. After years of not having maps on my Lowrance Elite 4x's I just upgraded to a pair of 93sv chirps and cannot wait until I'm on a mapped lake.

Forgive me as I am trying to understand more in depth, when you say lake maps, do you mean contours and depths and things of that nature? I have a GPS unit now that tracks way points and has names of various creeks and all. But does not show the depth on the map itself from contours, just the sonar depth.

I'll try that Todd. Does it take you back to the screen you started with?

Exactly. Here is a screen shot of one of my local lakes that has 1ft contours. It also shows navaides, docs, marinas, ramps, etc. Not all lakes have the same levels of detail though and some have none at all.

You can check the lakes you fish on Garmins site at

The new 1042XSV I've got has four "favorites" buttons that you can hit at any time and take you directly to whatever you have on these four buttons. It's a really nice feature.

The more I look the more the Echomap series looks like an option. Now to decide what size screen and options...
