    NMEA 2000 question

This may be a stupid question but have an older lowrance gps antenna mounted on my boat, a LGC-4000, will it work with a newer Garmin ECHOmap if I hook it into he backbone?, I assume I would get a better position fix with the external GPS than the built in internal one on the garmin.

The LGC4000 updates 5 times per second. The newer ECHOmaps update 5 times per second. Don't know if you could tell any difference.

The newer GPS systems are much better than the older ones and generally have a much tighter fix. Unless your mounting the echomap someplace where it cant see the sky it will likely be as good or better than an older external.

    How old is your LGC4000?

Manufacture date on this particular antenna was january 2011, I know they produced the LGC-4000 into 2012, maybe even later.

Thats not all that old, but Im guessing the internal will probably do just as good as that external as far as fix accuracy and possibly better. Wouldnt hurt anything to install it though and it gives you a backup GPS source.

Well no external antenna needed, installed the new garmin today and it locked position immediately while boat was still in the garage, my external lowrance antenna never got position lock in the garage, always had to have clear view of the sky, I'm beyond impressed with these new garmin units.
