Filling up - automatic shut off doesn't work?

2009 294 XLE. When I fill the boat up I have to be really careful. It seems like the automatic shut off on the gas station nozzles doesn't work with this boat. The first time I filled the boat up it gushed gas all over the place without warning. I've tried pushing the base of the pump as far as it will go (flush with the gas intake), but the only warning I get is the different sound as the gas actually starts filling the fill pipe. I still sometimes spill fuel as a result.

I can get around this but it's still a pain in the butt. My old boat (18' tin boat) didn't have this problem. Anyone else experience this?

The fill hose to the tank runs at an almost horizontal angle. The shut off doesnt hve time to work. I fill mine really slow.

My partners 201 is the same way. You pretty much got to turn the nozzle upside down and go slow on his. Real PITA... But most times we fill up at a store close to his house and the outside pump is on a slight slope which puts the boat sitting with the opposite side a little lower and you can filler up quick there.

Mine is the same and I believe most are. If you ever pull up to a pump on a slope make sure the boat is not leaning to side where you fill up. You will never get it to take gas

...and you'll probably get it on your shirt, pants, and shoes also.

Thanks guys; glad I'm not the only one. Turning the nozzle upside down - good idea, may help a bit.

I haven't had the gas on myself yet but I did have it running down the side of the boat and trailer. Really peeved me off the first time just before I went to put my shiny new boat in the water for the first time!

Now I find I have a reason to love my 1996 278. You just open the back compartment and watch the tank. Real Simple.

My 200XL does the same thing, my Champion 193 did the same thing. I now carry a 2x6 in the back of my truck. When I get to the gas pump I put the 2x6 on the ground and roll the tires up on the gas pump side. This creates a little angle for the fill hose and allows me to fill the tank a lot quicker.

Same problem with my 03' 185. You almost have to "listen" as the neck fills up to avoid over filling.
Only other problem is that My 150 carb Johnson takes it out twice as quick!!

That's exactly what I had to do with my old Ranger. Have yet to top off my new 294 but I have noticed you can see the tank from inside the bilge area if you look up in between the live well and rear storage bin. I'm even thinking about hiding a flashlight with some velcro tape in the bilge area so I can see it even better while at the gas pump.

I turn the nozel counter clockwise until the bottom of the handle is facing about 3 o'clock. Seems to work much better.

I like the way my 285 has the filler directly over the top of the clearance lights on the mudguard. Great fun when filling at night.

I go by sound; it's the only way to somewhat accurately do it.
