Water in Compartments of Stratos 273

How can I get the compartments water proofed in a 1998 Stratos 273DC?? The two front and middle compartments have about a inch or so of raised glass around them but still overflows into the compartments onto my tackle and rods. It is frustrating because I have to take everything out to air dry so it does not rust.

The water should flow down the channels between the raised fiberglass and either onto the floor of the boat (and then through the drain) or through drain holes built into the channels. Take a good look around everything and make sure there are no obstructions.

    I had a '99 273 and didn't have that problem.

There are no drain holes in the glass channel. I was thinking of putting a couple in with a drain hose going into the hull because if you fish on one side makes the boat lean and it collects water. Did you have drain holes through the center lid for the rod locker so water could drain, then down the channel out onto the floor drain?

I have a 98 273 DC and don't have a problem with water in the front compartments.

You could take an electric mustach trimmer (cheap at Walmart) and trim the carpet on the edges of the lids. This will create more of a chanel for the water to run down. Also check that water isn't coming in through the front panel. Good luck!!

If you get a chance...post some pics of your boat. Always like checking out other 273s!!

Great suggestion. When I first got my boat I had to replace a couple of connecters that were corroded do to water getting in from the front panel. It was because of the way the transducer cable was routed. Also, make sure the drain hose on the seat base is still connected.

Here are a couple of the boat. I like the boat a lot. It is great on gas. Don't use a lot on the water or to tow it to the lake. Solve the water problem it will be an excellant boat.

I purchased some adhesive backed automotive weatherstripping from JC Whitney and installed it on all of my compartments. It helped quite a bit. Sometimes water gets in the center compartment around the seat pedestal. Mine had a funky black rubber cup and drain hose installed to catch it.

Looks sweet skimming the water Fastman151 !!!
I will look into the adhesive tape tomorrow. I sealed the front bow panels with silicone and getting a cap to put in the front pedestal when not being used. And also thinned down the carpet where it touches the other doors. Now the wait is on for the next big rain so I can try it out!!!
    Thanks everyone for the help

Just a thought... Is your silicone on the underside of the rub rail in good shape? I remember another guy on here having trouble with water getting into the rod locker and he found this to be the culprit. Again, just a thought. Good Luck.

I also have a '98 273DC, I haven't had the problem but the previous owner said he had some trouble with compartments getting wet. The boat was filthy when I got it, cleaned it up and haven't had any water troubles since.

Do you have a jackplate and what prop are you running?

No jackplate and the prop is aluminum with a 21 degree pitch. I don't have any good numbers on it, as the tach doesn't work in the boat and haven't had a gps with me in it yet. I don't think I mentioned it's a 115 Evinrude, sure wish I had the 150 but it still gets me around better than the trolling motor on my little two man boat used to do!

I recently purchased a 283 DC that seems to allow a little water into the compartments after a heavy rain. Let me know how the weather stripping works as I thought about doing that when I replace the carpet in the near future.

You won't get good numbers with an aluminim prop. Hope you can get a few SS ones to test. Nice boat!!! Love the colors...

Re: Water in Compartments of Stratos 273 (Steve O.)

Well, I know I said I didn't have that problem with my 273....but today I went out and opened my tackle compartment and it had about a half in of standing water in one corner. I don't have a drain hose under the front seat base plate.....so I guess I'll be making a trip to town to buy one, on a good note I did get my trailer lights working properly this morning and the trolling motor is working right again. I just might have a nice boat around winter time!

might look at your latch, could be getting in through the key hole or around the latch assembly itself, i had that problem on one of my storage compartments. Fixed the seal and no more leaks since.
