Todd,
I have a 2003 200 xl that I have mounted an external transducer on for the GPS. When I get on plane the bottom reading goes out. Currently the transducer is mounted below the right side of the jackplate on the second lip. When I posted this question on BBC, everyone said to get a thru the hull transducer. I have an older GPS ( Eagle fishstrike 200c). Where do you guys as dealers mount a transom transducer? Or do you do a through the hull type now on every boat that you set up. Thanks in advance!

One of two things....

1) Where you have it now allows for a lot of turbulance as the water comes from the rear of the boat. This does not allow for a good reading as it can get air below the transducer.

2) The transducer you have could be a low-speed transducer (like a trolling motor transducer). These are not designed to read at high speeds.

Through-hull is the way to go.

When we install an aftermarket transducer we usually go as far back and in the right corner of the lowest portion of the hull. The factory mounts them in the middle of the hull just in front of all the pumps.....and we do have reading issues with the factory setup from time to time because the use the trolling motor puck in the bilge. We try to use the high speed xducer inside the hull.....it has a much better cone angle and holds the bottom much better.
