    Where to start?

    1996 Johnson Faststrike model #J150GLEDB (I think)

Was running down the lake this afternoon @ about 4,500 rpm and all at once the motor surged a couple of times and then acted like you turned the key off. I tried to restart it a couple of times and it would only idle for a second or two. After I got towed back to a different ramp that I put in at and they took my buddy to get my truck and trailer which took approx 2 hours. I tried it again and it started right back up like nothing ever happened. After I got home I ran a compression test and got 105-110 across all cylinders, so i suppose that ruled out it being blown up. Do you JohnRude Guru's think that I am possibly looking at a powerpack problem? Or should I be looking somewhere else?

Since many times a pack will only fail after it gets good and hot, (and since yours restarted after it cooled off) one way I've narrowed them down as the problem is to start the engine on muffs and point a hairdryer close up at the pack. If it dies, it's the pack.

Anybody figured out how to get the black Gooo out of those powerpacks so we can replace the 2$ components that go bad inside ?? (mostly diodes, scr's and capacitors/condensers) ?????

    I have a Merc Classic 50 powerpack I would like to autopsy...myself !
