Evinrude XP motor problems!!

I have an 1989 Evinrude XP 200 on a 201 Stratos. My boat has been at the shop for the past month and today the mechanic called stating that he cannot fix the problem. Here is the senario. I am driving along between 60MPH and 65MPH and the motor hesitates. It picks back up and then shortly after shuts down. The motor will start every time and will idle but when put under any pressure it just boggs down. The mechanic says that the number 5 cylinder will not fire and that he has tried everything and cant figure it out. The power pack has been replaced, all 6 coils, the stater, fly wheel, wiring harness and practically everything else.

I brought the boat home still not fixed. I am at a loss. If anyone has any ideas PLEASE let me know.

Welcome, if you post your model #, and serial# you might get a quicker answer to your problem...

I had an 87 XP that did the same thing. It showed all the symptoms that you describe. Inside one of the Amphenol(sp) connectors the wire had burned or corroded in two. I spliced the wire, taped the connection and it ran great - like always. Now I use dielectric grease on all electrical fittings, bulb sockets etc.. no more problems.

Switch the power pack from the good bank of cylinders to the #5 side and see if that helps.

By isolating the # 5 cylinder, it would seem that your just one part or repair away from success. My guess would be the coil, crank trigger/stator or a connector

The connectors that I referred to earlier are the black rubber two-piece things that are all over the XP's engine.
