201 Pro XL with 225 ETEC HO and 27p Tempest setup question

I just put my new to me 27p Tempest on the boat. Holeshot is great, but just before it planes over it blows out. As far as PVS plugs, I have a solid plug, one med. plug, and one totally open hole in the prop. I am going to get solid plugs and try that. Also, right before it blows out if I lift the throttle some it will vibrate quite a bit, but stops after it planes out. Could this be from the different size PVS plugs?

Once on plane, it seems to run good, but it was too rough to try it out. Prop shaft is 3" below pad right now.

What is everyone using as far as PVS plugs on this setup? I am kinda worried about the vibration on this one though??? Any thoughts?

Different boat and motor, but mine has 3 medium plugs and virtually no blowout.

A little 'blowout' is ok. It gets your motor up in the rpm range where it can make power. It should not however be overrevving and not allowing you to get on plane. When you hammer down it ok if it spins up to 4K or so as it's breaking over. That's what those holes are for is to let some exhaust escape over the hub thus causing the spin up of the motor. It should however catch quickly and then you immediately accellerate.

The vibration part concerns me a little. Was this prop brand new? Almost sounds like there may be a blade out of balance.

No, I purchased the prop from Blue203 on this forum. I hope it is not out of balance. I got some solid plugs and 3 of the smallest hole ones and I am about to head out to try it again.

Thanks guys, I will let you know what I find.

Well, the plugs did the trick. I put in two small holes and one closed plug and it has a good holeshot. The vibration also went away. I guess that was cavitation causing the vibrating or something like that.

Anyway, I was 3" under the pad and getting chine walk pretty bad at 70mph, so I raised the motor 1/4". Does anyone know the optimum height for this combo???

    Thanks

I run mine at 2-3/4, with 2 holes plugged and one small hole no blow out and no chine walk that I can tell.

Re: 201 Pro XL with 225 ETEC HO and 27p Tempest setup question (Leftcoast)

I run mine at 2 1/8 most of the time, if I am going to a rough lake (like Santee) I drop it to 2 1/2. That is my setup, and it doesn't seem to work well on others rigs...Most of the ones I setup I set at 2 3/4 and forget about it...

Man, what a difference 1/4" makes. Raised the motor to 2 3/4 and virtually eliminated the chinewalk. I am gonna try another 1/4" and see where that puts it. With a FULL tournament load and 2 190lb guys, 3/4 tank of gas, etc., I got 73MPH GPS.

When you say 2 3/4 under pad, where are you measuring from and what are you measuring?

    Here's the procedure for measuring...

Re: 201 Pro XL with 225 ETEC HO and 27p Tempest setup question (AB)

Been playing with the setup on the Tempest a little bit. It seems that the boat is just not hooked up good at normal cruising (part throttle, approx 40-50mph). But, when you step on the gas it will start to get up on pad and hook up better. At about 60mph you can finally feel the boat lift up and get on the pad, and rocket on up past 70.

Im thinking of having the prop B&B, but was wondering if adding some cup to it would help it lift and stay hooked up better. Anyone else noticed this with their Tempest setup???

    Thanks
