1990 evinrude xp 175

Friend of mine is looking at a rebuilt 175xp. owner says it was rebuilt at the shop in Florida. Owner is asking 1,500 or o.b.o. Has been rebuilt from top to bottom-lower unit. Not sure if Vro has been removed or not. Owner said it puts out 210 hp after rebuild. Suppose to go with buddy on Saturday and look at it. Owner said it has not been started in less than two years. Besides carbs needing rebuilt is there anything else to throw caution towards? Owner is asking $1,500 for motor and controls. Is mounted on a ragged out Cajun Bass boat and trailer.

Gt175's didn't make that much power, so it could be modified. See what heads it has, if they end in 638/639, then it has XP/GT 2.6 heads. They are fairly valueable and a common swap to raise compression. However you would have to run super unleaded unless the guy put the thick head gaskets in there. You would also have to back the timing off to about 24 degree's too.

I would warm it up, and then do a hot compression check. make sure the tach works, or it probably needs a regulator.

These engines are basically a low port 235, they have a 5800 Rpm limiter.
