Sonar charts using the SonarPhone T-Box....so i got this setup from Navionics to try out and never got a chance to put it on my other boat. If i understand it correctly i download the app on phone or tablet, go out on boat and record data and it will send it to the phone/tablet. My question is, do you have to have cell service for this to work? Also does this info get uploaded for sonar charts?? the places i fish are spotty at best for service. Looking to get it installed on this boat and give it a try.

You need the app, you link you're phone-tablet to you're Gen-3 with the wifi connection. You will be prompt to put a password, by default I think it's: 12345; then once they are link you open you're Navionics app and you boat.

You don't need cell coverage. I chart a lake last year that is accessible only by floatplane so there is no cell up there.
To upload you're log, once you got signal or using you're wifi at home you just update you're Navionics app.

You will need two Apps on your mobile device. There is an iOS app and an Android app, I use both.
Navionics Boating HD and Sonarphone . The Sonarphone App is free.

The Sonarphone is a Wifi transducer. You pair the Sonarphone to the mobile device and open the Navionics Boating app and then start Sonar Charts Live to create the contour mapping in real time on your device.

If you have an iPad without GPS, you will need a GPS antenna also so you will have depth and location to position the contour lines.
I have a 65 channel Bluetooth GPS antenna for use when I do Sonar Charts Live with any of the 6 devices I have setup for Sonar Charts Live and the Sonarphone. The antenna brand is Dual. I put that above the Sonarphone transducer so the depth and location is at the same place to have the best contour accuracy.

After you do the Sonar Charts Live recording and are in a Wifi internet area, your device will automatically upload the data to the Navionics Sonar Charts server. It will be added to the Sonar Charts program and shared.

You can turn off the sharing feature and you will just have the mapping on your device and not shared. Your Sonar Charts Live data will be overlayed on the Navionics Boating HD app. You can choose to display or not display the Live data.

You can also select to be notified that your data has been added to the Sonar Charts program and then you can do a manual update rather than an automatic update.

Just like using a Navionics+ card in your Lowrance, the Boating HD App has both map layers that you can choose which one to view.

Andre, i dont have the Gen 3 units and no lowrance wifi hub. It would be strictly to phone or tablet. My tablet is a wifi only (samsung/android).

Next question, do you have a choice of where it will store the data, on phone memory or phone external sd card?? Reason, phone is older and is pretty much maxed out on internal storage space but do have sd card in said phone. That would be the only issue with phone, tablet would be no problem as i got plenty of space on it.

I'm using a older Iphone and and a quite full Ipad-2 and I got no choice on where to store data but from what I heard from Navionics people that it doesn't take much space; I don't have a specific answer but I would recommend that you sent a e-mail to: Navionics Help <help@navionics.com

I just bought a hotmaps Platnum South chip last week at BPS, updated it before first use and I do not have any aerial photo overlay around Toledo Bend on either of my Gen 3 9's as was observed earlier in this thread by others, at least one month ago. Is anyone out there at Navionics awake and trying to fix this issue or going to put out some info on how to set up to get the info to work off the chip? I am very disappointed at this point with my new chip and the free unlimited updates. could use some help from Navionics if anyone is out
    there.

I spoke with them at length yesterday and they are aware of some issues and are actively working on it at this moment. There are always occasional glitches and gremlins when dealing with this type of data...so be aware and be patient, work in process to resolve.

Thanks Tommy for the update. We really appreciate your efforts to resolve this as well as many other issues but sometimes it really is hard to tell if navico and lowrance are listening to their customers. The frustrating thing about this issue is that this problem was identified in this forum more than a month ago and it is still not fixed. I am also disappointed and frustrated that I now have several good friends and former Lowrance users that are mapping parts of Toledo Bend everyday with their Garmin units and transducers, and not needing to wifi, internet, up load or down load data to some mothership and we are still unable to do this straight forward operation on what are suppose to be the best Units on the market. Is anyone at Lowrance aware of how far behind they are relative to this critical capability? I think you talk to both Navionics and Lowrance. Light a fire if you can on this one or they are going to lose more customers to Garmin. Pm me if you have time to talk about this.

Navionics does have Sonar Charts Live which works very well so I don't think you can blame them on that. But I do agree. Lowrance really needs a built in live mapping option. Both Hummingbird and Garmin have it. It is an extremely useful tool.

I did some across the platform multiple software, multiple units vs multiple mapping areas testing yesterday and forwarded those results including specific Lat/Lon examples to my Managers. They responded this morning with positive comments and informed that this glitch is recognized and there are several global tech departments working as we speak. What I have found that on only a few randomly selected lakes, ( I cannot check 10K lakes :), the map is perfect and then you can move 50 feet and even though it still shows the current up to date info, sonar charts etc., some of the features have issues. Of note is that the glitch does not seem to affect the contour data or interfere with the actual mapping which is good, at least on what I found. That is my personal observation and I cannot consistently make that happen across all maps. A weird inconsistent glitch for sure which I would guess just makes it more difficult to pin down for all lakes. I am not their tech guy, so that is just my impression. I can say for sure that they have been very responsive and proactive so I expect it will be corrected just as quickly as possible.

Hey Guys! I still get asked by some how to take advantage of Navionics SonarChart layer and activate it on your Lowrance, Raymarine and Humminbird units. Here's a video I did alongside Paul Michele from Navionics and Bassmaster Elite Series Pro Seth Feider demonstrating the ease of activating SonarCharts on your units. Check it out.

With the mobile app and your WiFi creating the Sonar Charts Live contours, that data will automatically upload to Navionics when you are in a WiFi area. If the body of water has no shoreline (zero line) or if it does and some of your recordings are shown on land, Navionics will draw a new shoreline to apply all your data. Processing the data to create Sonar Charts takes longer when they have to redraw or create the zero line.

This is a lake I did with Humminbird sonar logs that had no outline--same waypoint:

This lake had a zero line in Navionics data base but was not correct, some of my logs were shown on land. They re-drew the zero line to apply all my data.

You can tell also that a body of water has been corrected since they add docks like in Josh's blue highlighted example.

You can also tell that others are using your data when you see Community edits added:
