1) 6"
2) You can. You'll have to unbolt the motor and hoist it off the boat so you can install the plate. If you have an engine lift or hoist (or a couple extra people), you can knock it out in an hour or two.

Slidemaster is a very good plate, that is what most Ranger come with from the factory with manual plates.
I have a Stainless Marine I like it just fine. The only change I would make is a 6" set back over my current set up of 4"

Chad you may be able to buy one at Links Marine over off of Rt 72
The 8inch is cheaper then the 6" does 2 inches make a big deal?
I may be wrong but I think 8 would be too much set back for a 17-18 foot boat..
hate to say it but even 6" may be over kill for your boat and the low HP of the motor.
2) no you and a bud cannot do it unless you have a garage, or shop with a motor hoist and the PROPER repeat PROPER lifting eye for a yamaha engine. if you and or your bud lose grip you can do serious damage to your skeg, prop, motor and least of all yourselves ( can you say motor on my leg, foot or chest as it can knock a man over)
3) a good place to get a jackplate is PITSTOP marine ( a sponser) the hydro 4" would work great on your motor and boat. good luck and remember to also install a water pressure gauge when you install the jack plate otherwise you may jack it too hi and pop goes the yammie ha

8" is too much. 6" will be best and show you some nice benefits. I had 6" plates on both of my 17 1/2' Stratos'.
You and a friend would have a problem doing this (unless you have a lift of some kind like I said in my other post). You and two or three friends (like I said in my first post) can handle this with no problem. You need a couple or three people to do the lifting while another handles the bolting and unbolting. Your motor is not a monster and isn't all that heavy. Been there, done that. You couldn't do this if you had a larger motor unless you had the right equipment.

I have a general question about the jackplates. I see them come in two pieces and one piece. Is there an advantage to one or the other? I see the used two piece designs are always cheaper then the one piece units.

Hmm...Not sure I understand your question. A one piece jackplate would not be adjustable. It has to have two pieces so that you can adjust the motor up and down. One piece units are sometimes referred to as static or nonadjustable plates. Those are generally only used by people that know the exact height their motor needs to be at and will not be adjusting it any.
As to why one is cheaper, I don't know.

I think he is talking about the jackplates that are not connected in the middle. You have a left piece, and a right piece..... they suck IMO because you have to adjust both sides evenly. There is a set on the buy sell forum now.

Exactly what I was talking about. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for the response SwatDawg I know that the adjustment would not be as easy as the ones with a single bolt adjustment but what I really want to know is there issues with them? Are they as strong as an adjustable plate that is connected? Are they not rated for higher HP engines like say a 225?
